Instead of mobilizing politicians against the threat, instead of the Republican Party denouncing Trump and his supporters, it remains a prisoner of its most extreme elements. Also, no one rules out the possibility of Republicans regaining control of Congress in the midterm elections next November, as well as the fact that Trump may be back in the highest office of the country. The danger to democracy is clear. The question is what can be done inside the US, but also internationally to protect democracy. The example of Europe can be extremely useful. More specifically,

Globalization has led to the production of wealth in “forgotten” parts of the world and the unprecedented spread of democracy. In recent years, however, the imbalances caused by this redistribution of wealth have been felt, with many citizens in many developed countries on the sidelines due to unemployment and very low wages, due to their alienation from the social and economic elites.

Technological development and social media allow the wide and lightning spread of extremist views, resulting in the fragmentation of the political scene and the questioning of any authority and expert. The pandemic has most clearly shown the spread and influence of irrationality today.

What you may underestimate in democratic societies is the role of journalism when it violates the principle of objectivity. The case of Fox News in the US is crucial. It combines the economic and technological power of a traditional medium with the “guerrilla warfare” tactics of social networks dominated by populism and intolerance. Extreme voices of the internet and the channel are feeding each other, constantly increasing their influence, causing reactions and further polarization. The discord, which is maintained by the excessive reactions to every “challenge” of the other side, prevents the normalization of the situation, constantly weakens the country.

Joe Biden is trying to heal the wounds that arose during the four years of Trump that pre-existed and worsened in recent years. It seeks national unity to reduce inequality between citizens, to modernize infrastructure, to tackle the climate crisis and to shield democracy. A recent Internet conference convened by the President a few weeks ago showed that the United States wants to return to a leading role in defending liberal democracy at a time when, as last year’s Freedom House poll shows, democracy is declining internationally.

The US problem, however, translates into a problem for democracy around the world, as authoritarian leaders do not heed US dictates and weak groups do not rely on US aid. When the US fails to address internal strife, its credibility is undermined everywhere. Here it is useful to highlight the strength of Europe, which in recent decades has recovered from the aftermath of two totalitarian wars and is going through the longest period of stability and prosperity in its history.

Today, the European Union seems powerless, unable to turn its economic and population power into a heavy geopolitical footprint. It faces challenges from many angles. Solutions – or not – to these problems will determine the future and identity of Europe as a whole. The road is not easy but the EU is proof that solutions are possible. In Europe, the memories of the war between the EU member states are fresher than the memories of the civil war that decisively influenced the model on which the USA we know today was built. The way Europe has so far dealt with weaknesses and new challenges is its strength, that is, the consensus of different countries, the synthesis of views as painful and difficult as it is, the protection of the weak and the shielding of authorities and institutions is the secret. that those in power forget “.

The general estimate is that on January 6, 2021, when Donald Trump fanatics sought to block the ratification of Joe Biden’s election by Congress…

[390,819
1162,25,45,215
post-7334","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics","category-usa","tag-democracy","tag-eu","tag-liberal-democracy","tag-us
["GET
