This is a political, economic, and geostrategic victory for Russia and Germany.

The $11 billion 1222-kilometer (759-mile) underwater pipeline connection has been completed and has now doubled Russia’s gas export capacity through the Baltic Sea. The future efficiency of the Nord Stream system from 55 billion m3 of gas per year will reach 110 billion m3 per year.

Despite objections from some EU members and third countries such as Ukraine and the US, they have not been able to stop the project. In this sense, the completion of this pipeline is a diplomatic defeat for Ukraine, the EU member states rival of the pipeline and the USA.

On the other hand, it is a diplomatic victory for Germany and Russia, regardless of the formal conditions they will have to meet due to the Germany-US compromise.

Interdependence and stability

The new Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, in addition to the obvious EU energy dependence on Russia, also brings increased Russian economic dependence on the EU and even more brings the “gift” of greater political stability inside Russia and especially in the sector. of energy trade.

Any concerns of Ukraine, which wanted to be the sole mediator of Russian gas to the EU, have been completely ignored by the EU, and the EU’s refusal to link its energy future with third countries is a positive sign in its foreign policy.

As the EU’s energy dependence on Russia grows, so will Russia’s economic dependence on the EU, as the EU becomes its most important export partner. Increased EU-Russia interdependence can promote realism and composure on both sides.

The favored and the unfavored

At first glance, Ukraine may seem like a loser in this case, but “nothing bad is pure good”, which means that a positive result could be achieved through a negative result for Ukraine. More specifically, the Ukrainian leadership:

• It should stop considering Nord Stream 2 a Russian geopolitical weapon aimed at depriving Ukraine of political influence and revenue. This position of Ukraine will continue to create obstacles in its relations with the EU.

• It should stop considering the EU and especially Germany as the bad accomplice in this case.

• He should stop believing that the US is too weak to oppose Germany and Russia and not believe that the US was lying to them or that they are just cynical.

• It will have to find other ways and projects to replace the billions of dollars that will be lost annually from the state budget of Ukraine after the end of 2024 from the annual transit fees. No one wants to have a monopoly intermediary in every sector of the economy, let alone in the sensitive energy sector.

• Ukraine’s political system needs to be restructured and see its own mistakes that for decades after the end of the Cold War (1991) failed as a political system to rationally reform the gas trade and transit system due to the corrupt oligarchies suck the political life of their country.

• It should clean up corruption and drastically reduce bureaucracy in the public sector as the greater the bureaucracy the stronger the corruption and put into practice the country’s dependent political scene.

Nord Stream 2 is part of the completion of the large Eurasia project. In the future, the gas pipelines along with the economic land corridors that will be directed from Russia to the EU will be the “bones” of the skeleton of the body that will be the single body of the union of continental Europe with Asia, creating Eurasia.

Russia, for its part, must act in such a way that it does not risk unnecessary conflict.

The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline between Russia and Germany has now been completed.
