Egypt and Sudan, where the Nile River flows and crosses, respectively, have increased tensions by calling for the fair use of the Nile River.

The Nile River is a source of life

Egypt relies on the Nile for 95% of its water supply. The Nile River with a length of 6690 km and an average outflow of 2830 cubic meters per second crosses ten African countries. Egypt’s needs will increase in the future due to its growing population.

More than 85% of Egypt’s agriculture depends on the Nile River. The combination of prolonged droughts due to the phenomenon of climate change combined with the declining water supply due to GERD from Ethiopia creates a nightmarish scenario for Egypt.

by Thanos S. GERD has cost more than $ 4 billion and Ethiopia considers it the most valuable project for its people, as its massive power supply will drive 65 million people out of poverty.

To finance the project, the Ethiopian government issued bonds which were bought en masse by the Ethiopian people. In July 2020, Ethiopia filled the GERD for the first time with 4.9 billion cubic meters of water. With the completion of the second phase of construction of the GERD last July (2021), Ethiopia proceeded to a second filling with about 13 billion cubic meters of water, again causing tensions between Egypt and Sudan.

GERD Confronted Policies

Following the collapse of talks between the three countries in the African Union (AU) in April, Egypt lodged a complaint with Ethiopia at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in June 2021. At the same time, Egypt was supported by all its members. Arab League.

Egypt’s goal is for the Security Council to impose a binding agreement between Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan on the use of the Nile. But the Security Council does not want to be involved. At the same time, the United States is abstaining, especially after Ethiopia withdrew from the US-mediated negotiations in 2020. Each side blames each other for a lack of political will to compromise, raising tensions.

The insidious role of Turkey

Ethiopia recently signed a military and economic cooperation agreement with Turkey.
