After World War II, France was plagued by severe economic problems, and wars on many fronts (Syria, Lebanon, West Africa, Indochina) caused it to bleed profusely and absorb its potential.

France was split in two. Half of France considered the abandonment of its colonial possessions a betrayal, the other half believed that its preservation was impossible.

The French General Raoul Albin Louis Salan (1899-1984) consistently represented the first trend. During his long tenure in Indochina, he met one of the leaders of the Vietnam Liberation Movement, Vo Nguyen Giap (1911-2013). And although in the period (1945-1953), they were often confronted on the battlefields, a deep respect developed between them.

Raoul Albin Louis Salan, an Old-World fan, used a conventional war strategy. Vo Nguyen Giap, on the other hand, “the Great Napoleon of Asia” applied new methods that astonished the experts of his time. Raoul Albin Louis Salan lost, Vo Nguyen Giap won.

In the 1960s, Raoul Albin Louis Salan was imprisoned in France, while Vo Nguyen Giap was considered a hero. Since then, a significant portion of French public opinion has revised the image of Raoul Albin Louis Salan.

Raoul Albin Louis Salan & Vo Nguyen Giap, Vo Nguyen Giap & Raoul Albin Louis Salan in their time were celebrities and the world public opinion discussed their war moves every day. They were brilliant generals, and their action is being studied today by military academies. They were both nationalists and loved Indochina in their own different way.

General Vo Nguyen Giap

Vo Nguyen Giap

1911 He was born in the village of An Za in the province of Quang Binh in French Indochina.

(1920-1926) He works for the Haiphong Power Company, and is part of the Tan Viet Liberation Organization.

(1930) He was arrested for his anti-colonial activities and sentenced to three years in prison.
