Climate change and the gradual transformation of the Mediterranean climate into tropical are also evident in the last decade. Rise in temperature on an annual basis, especially in the summer months, more frequent heat waves of longer duration, less rain in winter, very low soil moisture in summer, difficult terrain with extremely flammable material.

Greece last week found itself unable to control the fires, forcing the political leadership to evacuate entire cities, towns and settlements and a state mechanism unable to react.

But climate change is one reason. There are other reasons that exist in countries like Greece and cannot cope with fires.

Reasons of bad mentality and social behaviour, anarchic construction, and state corruption

There are officially no forest cities in Greece. Unofficially, however, there are many forest cities. The problem is the mentality and education of a people that in cooperation with a corrupt state mechanism for several decades has led to this situation where citizens build houses illegally, in anarchic ways in forest areas, while raping the environment, and at the same time are the properties and their lives at the mercy of arsonists and unconscious citizens.

This is most modern Greeks who have been educated in a society where when you bribe the right civil servant everything can be done, and laws and rules can be violated. These young Greeks after decades of living in the urban fabric and in its apartments wanted to have their own “home”, small or palace size does not matter, in a forest area of coniferous trees that in the changing Mediterranean climate are a storehouse of gunpowder.

In all the serious countries of the world, the countries that are characterized as a state of law and respect for human rights, to build a city or a settlement, urban planners and surveyors first go and plan the cities and settlements respectively, defining parallel the public streets, public buildings, common areas-parks, thickets, and the rest of the land are available for sale to the individuals who want to build. In Greece the opposite happens.

Arbitrarily Built Houses in the Forest, Greece

In Greece, with the blessings of the state mechanism, the young Greek goes and builds arbitrarily and illegally on a plot of land in the forest that is not in the urban or residential plan and by bribing the appropriate employees from foresters, town planners, etc. he builds a house whose branch of pine wants to lean on the balconies of the house.

At the same time demanding from the illegal small alley that passes in front of his house in the forest to make a bus stop, at the same time stepping on the adjacent plot to put his car, without at the same time carrying out the required plot cleaning leaving most of the available “fuel” (dry leaves) in those, which with the high drought turn into napalm bombs.

The «fuel» is not collected in time or at all by individuals and the local government, while illegal outdoor garbage dumps are everywhere. It takes a lot of effort and determination to change mindsets, attitudes to improve the situation in fire prevention.

If you want a cottage or a house in the forest, you must accept any dangers and not have arrogance as a citizen when the forests are burning and have absolutely no consequences.

At the same time, the unconscious Greek citizen owns a house in a forest area, cooks in the countryside, performs thermodynamic works, deforests areas without collecting deforestation products, creating explosive piles of fuel, while leaving the untrained ones at home. fire protection measures waiting each time to be saved by the Greek state and the state mechanism respectively.

Forest Fire-fighters on Duty

But which Greek state and which state mechanism respectively?

State mechanism is the state system that prepares crisis response plans based on previous experience, which are repeated (in Greece every summer) with nightmarish frequency.

Who gave all these Greek citizens the right to build illegally in the forests? The permanently corrupted Greek state mechanism. When a house is built illegally in the forest who gives him permission to connect to electricity, telephone, and water. But of course, the corrupt state mechanism, forestry office, town planning, tax office, etc., which allow everything for the right price.

Then the Greek politician comes and promises to legalize the arbitrary construction in the forest. Arbitrary construction built at the expense of the public treasury and social security funds. These promises of legalization last for years so that the specific owner pays-bribes the civil servants every year so that they do not demolish it. This creates attitude creates financial hostages of the corrupt state mechanism.

Helicopter participates on fire extinguishing

When it is checked by the forester because there is no immediate complaint to stop the construction of any house in the forest. They stop the construction only to those who do not bribe government officials. But the Greeks who do not bribe government officials do not go to build arbitrary construction in the forest.

Two hundred years of arbitrary construction, with a state mechanism and the Greek politicians that unofficially fueled this arbitrary construction at the expense of the environment just to get votes for the political parties.

Who passed the laws where professional type cooperatives (organisations) have the right to acquire forest land for a minimum price? It is the legal way to overcome and legitimize illegality.

A professional type of cooperative acquiring this area in a forest and in case of partial fire or loss of forest area that belongs to it, whether it comes with the intervention of nature or human hand, then gives its members the right to build legally in the area that belongs to it in the forest without the forest department or any other state authority can intervene.

But, of course, these laws were passed by Greek politicians so that their voters would be comfortable with civil servants, the vast majority of whom are illegally appointed through political interference in the state apparatus and paid from the public treasury.

The Long-term bad state planning

Every time a fire breaks out in the woods, the Fire Brigade is sent to put it out. But the Fire Brigade, due to its training, knows how to put out fires only in urban areas and not in forests. For this reason, when the fire breaks out in the forest the firefighters either go around the houses or sit on the street where the houses are and wait for the fire to come to them as the fire burns unmolested in the forest, while waiting for the air to put out fires in forests.

Forest fire Fighter

Since the abolition of the Forest Fire Brigade in Greece and the forest fires were taken over by the Fire Brigade, the forest fire zones, the forest fire-fighting roads, the forest fire-fighting tanks and the forest clearings have been abolished while they do not know the international practice of extinguishing fire in forests, that fire is extinguished by fire. For this reason, the Fire Brigade, through the training it knows, only protects settlements, and lets the fires burn the forests.

The Forest Fire Brigade must have a different training from the Fire Brigade. Greece in the 1990s had an excellent Forest Fire Brigade which was gradually abolished. If the Greek state mechanism does not know how to train forest firefighters, let it turn to the American forest firefighters who are well trained.

The Greek government last year did not renew the employment contracts of 5066 Forest Firefighters responsible for Forest Protection. For this reason, the number of firefighters is not enough, while in the affected areas there are no firefighters, and the residents are screaming for firefighters as their houses are burning.

The problem of Greece is forest, state, urban, architectural, and bad mentality and planning, state corruption and / or big interests.

Forest Fires in Northern Evia (island of Evia)

In order to achieve the protection of forests, the state must ensure that their management will have a financial benefit for the one who undertakes it. In other words, the forests should be controlled in terms of the resin produced, logging, honey, livestock, etc., so that the forests are renewed in a natural and controlled way, but also there is an economic benefit for their preservation.

Major Interests & State Corruption or Arsonists?

Last week, during the devastating fires, entire areas were evacuated from their inhabitants and set on fire, while the state mechanism was unable to extinguish the fires.

Fires at five and ten points at the same time are more likely to start from arson than from climate change. When virgin forests are burned it is the basis of incendiary design and not a rare case.

With the green economy and the shift to green energy, Greece closed the lignite plants that generated electricity and gave many permits for the installation of wind turbines and RES in general.

The powerful lobby of the tourism industry that contributes the largest percentage to the formation of the Greek annual GDP managed with a lot of pressure to the Greek political parties not to give permits for the installation of wind turbines in the sea area of the island complexes of Cyclades and Ionian respectively. strong winds develop over time and are the right place to install wind turbines.

Island of Evia

Another location where strong winds are developing is the northern part of the island of Evia that burned down leaving it to its fate without giving it the necessary help.

Generally, on the island of Evia:

1. Strong winds develop throughout the year.

2. The island is very close to the prefecture of Attica where five million people live – the largest consumer mass of electricity customers in Greece.

3. There is an existing electricity transmission network in island of Evia which is connected to Athens, making it ideal to connect RES based in Evia, and to transfer electricity to Athens, without requiring investments to create a new high-cost electricity network.

The Greek state has given permission to specific companies operating in wind farms in the areas of Northern Evia that were burned by a diabolical coincidence.

The Prime Minister of Greece Konstantinos Mitsotakis promised in his speech to the Greek people to put into practice during his term the reforestation of all burned areas and as stipulated by the Constitution of Greece.

The position of the Greek Prime Minister is to suppress the justified anger of the citizens who saw their property being burned. In our opinion, however, the complete reforestation of the burned areas of Northern Evia, which will take thirty years to be fully achieved, is wrong.

For this area to develop and prosper, it should:

1. The burned areas to be declared for the most part arable, while leaving specific areas of land due to the morphology of their soil (e.g., gorges, ravines) to be reforested.

2. Then the Greek Government will have to distribute these arable lands to the local population. One hectare of arable land (about 10 acres) for each permanent resident.

3. Next the young farmers-growers should choose specific crops that will be climate resistant and will require minimal watering.

4. It would be ideal to cultivate one or two types of crops in all the specific arable lands with export orientation.

It may be a priority and rightly so, to save human lives as expressed many times by the Greek Prime Minister himself and his government officials, but also the lives that have been saved by losing their homes are lives that will always be mortgaged to debts both them and their children.

There is no person on the planet who has not cried at the sight of Forest Fires, whether these fires take place in the…

[818,390
957,2754,378,25,1921,2753,2752,146
post-5173","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-europe","category-politics","tag-climate-change","tag-climate-crisis","tag-corruption","tag-eu","tag-fire","tag-forest-fire-fighters","tag-forest-fires","tag-greece
["GET
