According to the U.S. Army, the new printer will produce large metal objects of military vehicles either for their production or spare parts for their support-maintenance.

In this way it is believed that the cost of manufacturing and supporting its vehicles will be dramatically reduced. The main contractor of the construction project is Astro America which is selected to manage US Army’s effort to build world’s largest metal 3D-printer for ground vehicle production. Sub-manufacturers will be Ingersoll Machine Tool, Siemens AG, and MELD Manufacturing.

GVCC awards contract to build the largest metal 3D printer for ground vehicles in world Photo by the website www.army.mil

The printer will run on a database. Each object will have a unique production number that will contain all the information necessary for its proper construction. The printer location will be located at the Rock Island Arsenal-Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center. The duration of construction will be 14 months.

In addition, the printer will also be used as a means of producing new, innovative designs for testing and evaluation. The highest performance of the printer will be the production of objects 9.14 meters long, 6.10 meters wide and 3.66 meters high.

It should be noted that in this process, spare parts for military-style platforms have also been produced, the French have also entered where parts of the French Navy’s Rafale fighters are equipped with 3D printed parts (tank drainage control unit) (https://3dnatives.com/rafale-marine-nationale-impression-3d-03032020/#!). In addition, the French company Naval Group produces a 3D printed propeller for the manufacture of additives intended for war equipment. The surface ship that will use it is a mine hunter named Andromeda.
