With all votes counted, the Left-wing Inuit Atagatigiit Party (IA) received 37.42%, defeating the ruling Socialist Siumut Party securing 30.10% of the electorate. (see table below of the election results that took place on 6 April 2021). The IA jumped 11 points compared to the results of the 2018 election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The IA’s main political agenda is based on environmental protection and was strongly opposed to a rare earth mining plan involving the exploitation by foreign rare earth mining companies from China, Australia & Canada in an area south of the island of Greenland (Kvanefjeld) that includes a rare earth mining complex. This area is one of the largest deposits of rare earths on the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Many foreign rare earth mining companies had promoted the ruling Socialist party’s election campaign in the hope of claiming areas in international contests from Greenland’s Socialist government. The IA is not totally opposed to mining activities.
