The problem facing the EU regarding the production of Covid-19 vaccines is because the ingredients to produce mRNA vaccine require ingredients such as lipid nanoparticles produced in the USA, from where exports are not allowed, in the context of national security and defence decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By decision of former US President Donald Trump, shortly before his departure from the White House, restrictions were imposed on the export of vaccines as well as the raw materials necessary for their production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU, for its part, is trying to find ways to strengthen the production capacity of its member countries to acquire so-called biological-defence preparedness, which will enable them to better deal with new mutations, but also later with new viruses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Germany is an EU member country leading the way in the development of Covid-19 vaccines. Two German BioNTech companies that its research supports the production of the American Pfizer vaccine, and CureVac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The development of CureVac’s production capabilities can yield up to three hundred (300) million vaccines in the current year due to restrictions imposed by the US on the raw materials needed to manufacture vaccines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fact that there is no strategic autonomy of the European pharmaceutical industry to date therefore forces the Commission to find ways to strengthen the production capacity of its member countries, to obtain the necessary biological defence, which will allow them to cope optimally with any new mutations and future emerging new viruses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

British-Swedish pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca delayed some of its vaccine deliveries to the EU, while Pfizer-BioNTech continued its planned deliveries of its vaccine to the UK, passing any delays in EU-related production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Commission, in turn, has tried to react by placing some restrictions on exports of vaccines produced in the EU, to compensate for the restrictions in force in the USA and the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By February 2021, the US had vaccinated 11.79% of its population, the UK 17.64%, and the EU 0.00015% of its population, respectively. However, the UK rate does not concern integrated vaccination actions involving two doses, but only the first dose of the vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Boris Johnson government has decided to lengthen the period between the first and second doses of the vaccine to increase the number of people vaccinated with at least one dose. This has improved the UK’s statistics vis-\u00e0-vis the US and the EU, but it is not certain that the defence of citizens against the Covid-19 has been strengthened.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
