Germany, and always in relation to the size of its population, has the least deaths in all 27 EU member countries.

This is certainly a huge success for Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has completed fifteen years at the helm of Germany.

At the same time German GDP is projected to fall to around 5% by 2020 when the fall in other member countries such as France, Italy and Spain are double digits.

by Thanos S. Given these sanctions on specific companies and persons involved in the energy sector, any attempt by Turkey to exploit marine areas of energy wealth that do not belong to them is in practice called off.

Because of these sanctions, therefore, there are no specialized international companies and multinational energy companies that will want to engage in activities outside international legitimacy and jeopardize their economic cooperation with the EU.

If Turkey continues to question the sovereignty and sovereign rights of Greece and Cyprus (EU member countries) equally, it will only succeed in increasing the chances and sanctions imposed on the entire Turkish economy.

These EU sanctions will exacerbate any international sanctions so far against Turkey that translate into an increase in the number of cancellations of large foreign investments in Turkey, an increase in the withdrawal of foreign capital, a drastic lack of foreign exchange, an even greater devaluation of the Turkish lira.

In fact, Turkey’s economy is deteriorating, but without directly touching the Turkish people, who in such a case of sanctions directly to Turkey, the Turkish people would rally around the regime of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Now the economic distress and anger of Turkish citizens is directed at the face of the President of Turkey.

Moreover, the EU and especially Germany want to coordinate with the US on all foreign policy issues. Unlike the EU, however, the US does not border Turkey, nor is the territorial integrity of US states such as EU member countries under threat.

The big challenge Angela Merkel will soon face will be whether she will be able to respond to calls for new US President Joe Biden to work with her when she raises the issues of Nord-stream 2 implementation and Germany’s cooperation with Russia as well as Germany’s increased public spending on NATO defence spending.

Both Angela Merkel and Joe Biden are experienced politicians. Certainly, Angela Merkel is the EU’s most charismatic Figure Stateswoman, and these new challenges will give them the opportunity to show off her leadership role.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s popularity is soaring, given the perfectly successful handling of the Covid-19 pandemic in Germany.
