Apart from Iran, it is also Pakistan which, as countries, does not recognise Israel.

In recent years Turkey-Azerbaijan-Pakistan have coordinated and continue to coordinate in terms of economic cooperation and support each other for their territorial integrity. In this way they have created an informal economic-political and military union of states.

Armenia’s alliances

Armenia as the other warring party in the War in Nagorno-Karabakh is supported by Russia and the organisation Collective Security Treaty Organization-CSTO known as “Tashkent Pact” or “Tashkent Treaty”. Members of this organisation are Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan. CSTO plays a NATO-like role in Asia. If Armenia requests military assistance, CSTO members are obliged to provide it. CSTO is led by Russia.

However, any military assistance from the CSTO concerns the internationally recognised Armenian border, which Azerbaijan knows and will not try to attack them to provoke the CSTO’s intervention in favour of Armenia.

Support for Armenia is also given by France, which has a large Armenian community on its territory. Support to Armenia and always based on geopolitical and economic interests is also provided by India. India recently signed a defence agreement with Armenia to sell weapons systems to Armenia.

The India-Armenia alliance is the awe-inspiring rival to the Turkey-Azerbaijan-Pakistan military alliance.

That is why Turkey supports Pakistan’s Kashmir Jammu positions on the Kashmir issue, openly criticising India’s positions, those concerning the withdrawal of the special status of Jammu & Kashmir in 2019.

The paradox in these geopolitical alliances is that Iran, a highly Islamic country, supports Armenia to counter Turkish influence in Azerbaijan. At the same time Turkey-Azerbaijan are working together to share the wealthy resources of the Caspian Sea at the expense of Iran.

If we put into the geopolitical equation that Israel supports Azerbaijan, that explains why Iran, a radical Islamic country, supports Armenia as a Christian country.

Iran has given Russia approval to use two bases it has in Iranian territory for the Russians to supply Armenia, bypassing the airspace of Turkey and Georgia that has been closed for Russian planes.

Nagorno-Karabakh fighting

What has been achieved so far on the battlefields

Each war has the achievement of concrete achievements on the battlefields so that they can then be capitalised on political achievements after the ceasefire.

Azerbaijan began this war by considering that the geopolitical context allows and given that with Turkey’s help it is powerful, to launch war operations to occupy the territories it lost in the 1994 war and as additional achievements to occupy as large parts of the Nagorno-Karabakh in order to reach a military solution.

To date it seems that Azerbaijan’s above objectives are not being achieved on the battlefields to gain strategic advantage and sit at the negotiating table from a position of strength.

Failure to achieve these strategic objectives and the acquisition of strategic advantages would be a complete failure, creating many internal problems within Azerbaijan, putting Azerbaijan’s political and economic regime in the crosshairs of harsh criticism.

The Solution to a Ceasefire in the War of Nagorno-Karabakh

As the chances of a peaceful settlement seem diminished, a summit like that held in 2010 with the participation of France, Russia, and the US, but with participation including Turkey, should be resumed.

First of all, the two states – Armenia and Azerbaijan – should commit themselves to avoiding the use of firearms of heavy artillery and explosives and always in the same way that China and India did in their recent small-scale conflict in the Ladakh region of the Himalayas. Then there should be an exchange of populations and, if necessary, soils.

No international peaceful initiative will succeed if Russia itself does not engage with determination. But Russia is waiting intelligently and since there is no clear and decisive victory for one side or the other, then it will take on the role of referee but also by putting Turkey in as a member of the Minsk Group (France, Russia, USA).

This will satisfy Turkey’s complacency, which likes to call it a «regional power» but calls for future geopolitical exchanges in other geopolitical fields on the planet involving Russia and Turkey.

Surely, any solution will involve hard and painful compromises from both countries and enormous political costs. But the road to peace is difficult and the road to war is easier in this region of the Caucasus and as the history of the war in these two countries has shown us.

In addition to Turkey, which directly supports the “brother” state of Azerbaijan, there are other countries involved that have chosen to support either Armenia…

[836,3
1974,1973,1972,1998,1976
post-3183","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-asia-geopolitical","category-geopolitical","tag-ajerbaijan","tag-armenia","tag-nagorno-karabach","tag-nagorno-karabakh-war","tag-war
["GET
