Turkish Islamic nationalism means sacrificing the individual in favor of the higher religion and the leader.

Islamic Nationalism

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ‘narrative’

The Turkish President’s political “narrative” that the extraction, exploitation, disposal and marketing of gas and oil deposits in the Eastern Mediterranean will save the Turkish economy has a lack of arguments.

Firstly, no one has documented with evidence the existence of this mineral wealth in the maritime areas of the Eastern Mediterranean illegally claimed by Turkey. Currently, demand for fossil fuel consumption is in the nadir, making oil prices move in a low-price range.

At the same time, many EU-led countries have begun to gradually implement the ambitious “green transition” project of its economy, which means that its economy will increasingly become independent on fossil fuels and the future demand for oil will remain low.

This means that the extraction, promotion-supply and marketing of oil and gas from such great sea depths do not meet the economic conditions for their profitable exploitation. Moreover, Turkey does not have sovereign rights or fulfil international legitimacy in the specific maritime areas of the Eastern Mediterranean to exploit them.

A sound policy on Turkey’s part would be the ever-increasing rate of investment in clean energy production that would lead the Turkish economy to its own ‘green transition’. These investments should be made in South West and South Eastern Turkey.

Moreover, if the Turkish President had pursued a moderate policy with the countries neighbouring Turkey, he would have managed to make Turkey a transit hub for gas and oil. The fact that it is in crisis with all the countries neighbouring Turkey shows that no one trusts this role in Turkey.

The Turkish maritime research ship “Oruc Reis” was in the centre of crisis

The Damages to the Turkish economy and society respectively

President Erdogan’s aggressive strategy to date exacerbates the crisis of confidence manifested internationally at the expense of the Turkish economy. Turkey’s illegal maritime research activities in the Eastern Mediterranean have also led to a deterioration in the creditworthiness of the Turkish state and the Turkish banks (Moody’s).

At the same time, the slippage in the price of the national currency has accelerated, in relation to the euro and the dollar. As a result of these policies, Turkey’s economy has been increasingly hit and sanctioned by international capital markets.

Capital flight abroad, disappearance of valuable tourist currency, postponement of investments, exchange rate crisis and continued fall in the international exchange rate of the currency is the tip of the iceberg of problems in the Turkish economy.

Given that Turkey must import gigantic amounts of energy and pay for them in US dollars, such a slippage in the Turkish lira is a huge loss.

The prices of fuel, medicines, and imported products in general will increase drastically and their purchase will become remarkably formidable for millions of Turkish citizens who are already in the status of extreme poverty. Due to the treatment of the Covid-19 pandemic in the summer of 2020, the tourism industry did not work to provide the foreign exchange reservesl, which is vital for the Turkish economy, so the situation will deteriorate.

Turkey is no longer able to further devalue its currency to benefit its export businesses. This also means that government spending will increase dramatically, while incomes will fall further as tax payments and other living needs remain at the same if not higher level.

A significant proportion of Turkish banks have borrowed capital in hard currency (euro, dollar) due to the prevailing low interest rates. The total foreign currency loan portfolio makes up 40% of all loans. In addition, a large proportion of Turkish companies have borrowed in foreign currency.

Their inability to repay will cause a domino of bankruptcies, dragging Turkish entrepreneurship into a huge bankruptcy vortex, causing a huge increase in unemployment, a loss of revenue for state coffers and losses of social security contributions to Turkey’s social security funds.

Poverty in Turkey increases dramatically

At the same time, the revelations of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists in collaboration with Buzzfeed and U.S. Fin Cen files reveal that Turkish President Erdogan and his family are “laundering” black money through Turkish banks that funnels it into investments abroad.

The Central Bank of Turkey in the summer of 2020, in its bid to support the Turkish lira’s exchange rate, spent $65bn, thereby reducing its foreign exchange reserves to $40bn in early September 2020. At the end of September, it is highly likely that Turkish citizens will also suffer the EU sanctions imposed.

In this case we will have a complete collapse in the already broken Turkish economy, leading to a deep economic recession and poverty respectively of millions of Turkish citizens.

Turkish management of migration-refugee problem against EU as a blackmail weapon

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the second time since (2015-2016) tried to blackmail the EU by releasing migration flows from Turkey to Greece in March 2020. Its aim, as it was then, was to create discord in the EU over the management of the migration-refugee problem and to extract as many benefits as possible.

This time, however, it failed, due to the strong response on the part of the Greek government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis that blocked migration flows at both the land and sea borders respectively between Greece and Turkey (see analysis entitled “Greece: EU Shield in its Migration Problem“).

On the contrary, what the Turkish President’s failed blackmail has achieved is to rally the whole EU and support Greece, resulting in a stronger guarding of the land and sea borders between Greece (EU) and Turkey.

As a result of these practices of the Turkish President was isolating Turkey in the diplomatic field because he tried to repeat the first migration crisis (2015-2016) in the EU.

The wrong design of neo-Ottoman expansionism strategy

The Turkish President’s neo-Ottoman expansionism strategy builds on the growing domestic production of weapons systems aimed at freeing Turkey from the Western defence industries, spending huge sums of money on an admittedly ambitious armament program that has been in place since 2013.

But after the failed coup against the Turkish President (July 2016), the Turkish President imposed a flattening pogrom on Turkish Armed Forces officials based solely on political criteria. This policy alone deprived the Turkish Armed Forces of its most worthy officials.

His decision to “punish” the U.S., which holds them responsible for the failed coup against him, led him to the decision to buy and procure the Russian SS-400 anti-aircraft/anti-ballistic missiles weapon system.

This decision led to Turkey’s expulsion from the program to build the American F-35 fighter jets, stripping it of the right to obtain them. At the same time, it deprived the Turkish aircraft carrier under construction of this F-35 fighter jet, which would give it a comparative advantage.

U.S. F-35 fighter jet that Turkey will not receive

The “charlatanistic policies” continued where when the President of Turkey in his attempt to appease the USA, does not activate the specific Russian S-400 weapons system that Turkey has already received.

On the other hand, France’s support for Greece through a signed defence agreement and the procurement of French weapons systems by Greece provoked the ire of the Turkish President, who described French President Emmanuel Macron in unconscioned words.

In response, France is leading EU member countries to impose economic sanctions on Turkey, which will make the Turkish economy more difficult. Germany, despite its timeless pro-Turkish policy, cannot ignore France’s sensitivities and Turkey’s abhorrent attitudes against France. Turkey’s ignoring that the EU is based over time on the understanding of the Franco-German axis.

European citizens’ opinion of President Erdogan is bad

The whole of Europe and the world in general every day is informed of the barbarities committed by the Erdogan regime against its political opponents and against the Kurdish minority.

Erdogan’s decision to turn Hagia Sophia from a museum into a mosque struck sensitive chords in European public opinion. At the same time, the UN says Turkey’s “warrior representatives” are now too close to be charged with war crimes because of the barbarities against the Kurdish population on Turkish-controlled territory in Syria.

The European Parliament’s resolutions are extremely strict for the Turkish President and the policies he follows.
