Since then, the company has focused on its Trent family of engines, which are primarily used for wide-body aircraft, such as the Airbus A350 and A330neo, and the Boeing 787.

According to the British government, the agreement establishes a framework for a joint investment, with specific funding allocations subject to further approvals, cost reviews, and the finalization of terms. Rolls-Royce also clarifies that it intends to invest significantly more capital than the British government into the narrow-body engine program.

The UltraFan 30 is an engine in the 30,000-pound (approximately 133 kN) thrust class, designed for the next generation of aircraft with capacities comparable to the current Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX.

The new engine is based on the UltraFan technological architecture, which was first tested in 2023 using a much larger technology demonstrator engine. The original UltraFan featured a fan with a diameter of 140 inches (approximately 3.56 meters) and was designed for high-thrust applications. The UltraFan 30 version will utilize a fan with a diameter of 90 inches (approximately 2.29 meters), adapting the same core technology to the requirements of smaller passenger aircraft.

A key feature of the UltraFan 30 is the use of a reduction gearbox between the turbine and the fan. This configuration allows the fan to rotate at a lower speed than the shaft driving it, ensuring that each component of the engine operates within its most efficient rotational speed range.

The UltraFan 30’s reduction gearbox is designed to transmit approximately 20 MW of power, while the engine itself features a bypass ratio of up to 15:1 and an overall pressure ratio of around 50:1. A high bypass ratio means that a much larger volume of air flows around the engine core rather than through it, which enhances propulsive efficiency and reduces fuel consumption.

Rolls-Royce aims for a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 20% compared to engines currently in service—a target that remains to be verified through testing and final certification. The design also incorporates fan blades made from carbon-fiber composites and titanium, advanced materials for the engine’s hot section, and additive manufacturing techniques.

Unlike the open-fan concept being developed by CFM International under the RISE program, the UltraFan 30 retains a conventional nacelle (casing) around the fan. In this way, Rolls-Royce seeks to achieve significant efficiency gains while maintaining an architecture that can be more easily integrated into future aircraft designs.

The company completed the review of the UltraFan 30’s basic design in the summer of 2026 and is planning the first ground test of the demonstrator engine for 2028.

The timeline is critical, as Airbus and Boeing are expected to make decisions regarding the engines for their future aircraft within the next few years, with the new types potentially entering service between the mid- and late 2030s.

The significance of this endeavor is substantial, given that the market for narrow-body aircraft engines is currently dominated by two suppliers: CFM International—a joint venture between GE Aerospace and Safran—with its LEAP family, and Pratt & Whitney, with its PW1000G GTF engines.

The entry of a third competitor could shift the balance regarding future orders, although the development, certification, and support of a new engine require massive investment and a long-term industrial commitment.

However, this £2.5 billion program is not limited to civil aviation. The agreement encompasses gas turbine technologies for both commercial and military aircraft, with potential for the shared application of advanced materials, thermal management, electrical power generation, and new engine core technologies.

It is worth noting that, in the military sector, Rolls-Royce is involved in developing the propulsion system for the future fighter jet under the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP)—a collaborative initiative between the UK, Italy, and Japan. Although the requirements for a high-performance military engine differ significantly from those of a civil turbofan, there are critical shared technological areas, particularly regarding high-temperature materials, cooling, and power management.

The British government and Rolls-Royce have agreed on a ten-year research and technological development program worth £2.5 billion (approximately $3.3 billion), with the primary…

[620,946
7222,6168,5011
post-30771","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business","category-companies","tag-aircraft","tag-engines","tag-rolls-royce
["GET
