Yet, there is something that most people might overlook: emotional stability stems more from the habits we cultivate over time than from our genes.

If you, too, wish to attain emotional stability, read on to discover some of the habits adopted by emotionally stable individuals.

They embrace uncertainty

We would love to know how a job interview went the moment it ends, or to receive our test results instantly, just to avoid the anxiety of waiting. We might also constantly seek validation for our performance; otherwise, we live in a state of persistent stress.

However, this is not possible. Consequently, we become anxious and develop habits—often harmful ones, such as overeating or endless scrolling on our screens. At the same time, we seek reassurance from others, only to be told that “everything will be fine”—a response that creates expectations and may, in fact, lead to even greater anxiety.

Avoiding uncertainty may bring temporary relief, but in reality, it only leads to more overthinking.

Emotionally stable individuals tolerate uncertainty—or at the very least, possess the strength to endure it—precisely because they embrace it. They succeed in building confidence in their own abilities, rather than succumbing to the fantasy that uncertainty can be avoided by shifting responsibility onto others.

They accept negative emotions

Just as they do with uncertainty. Although it is in our nature to avoid pain—our very bodies react negatively to it—accepting negative emotions is not a mistake. For example, when you lift weights at the gym and feel pain, it is a sign that you are becoming stronger.

But what would happen to your physical health if you avoided everything unpleasant or painful? Well, you wouldn’t be very healthy, would you? The same applies to our emotional world. Just because an emotion is painful, it does not mean it is “bad,” nor does it mean that you are “bad” for feeling that way.

If you get into the habit of viewing your emotions as negative things—and consequently avoiding them—you are training your brain to fear your own feelings. This sets the stage for long-term emotional pain and instability.

They have realistic expectations

We all have desires and expectations—often grand and unattainable ones—directed toward ourselves, our children, our friends, and life in general. But what happens when these expectations are not met? We become disappointed and struggle to cope with failure or rejection (difficult emotions).

In the short term, unrealistic expectations make you feel good because they provide a false sense of control and certainty, which alleviates your anxiety. In the long term, however, they lead only to pain, as they so often clash with reality.

Expressing Needs and Anxieties

Being able to pursue our dreams, satisfy our needs, and overcome our anxieties is a crucial part of maintaining a healthy emotional balance.

Unfortunately, many people are taught from a young age that asking for what you want—or prioritizing your own desires and needs—is selfish. Consequently, as the years go by, they become accustomed to telling themselves that what they want is not important.

Guess what happens when you spend a lifetime telling yourself that your own desires and needs are not as significant as those of others?

You will never feel worthy enough or good enough. Many people are plagued by low self-confidence and chronic self-doubt, either because they do not know how to ask for what they want or because they are afraid to pursue it. As a result, they are tormented by inner turmoil, dissatisfaction, self-directed anger, and chronic anxiety….

Certain biological factors influence how emotional we tend to feel.
