The vehicles were fitted with extensive metal protective structures designed to limit the effectiveness of Russian FPV drones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ukraine Turns an M1A1 Abrams Into an Assault Gun!\" width=\"540\" height=\"960\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/u9GKskF-uTE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most significant change, however, lies not merely in the additional armor. Armored vehicles now operate as part of a broader network of unmanned systems. Reconnaissance Mavic drones monitor the battlefield and Ukrainian FPV drones intercept enemy drones, while heavy Vampire drones can provide offensive support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In one of the described operations, a Ukrainian FPV drone reportedly shot down a Russian drone before it could strike the Abrams tank. The tank and the Bradley completed their direct-fire mission and subsequently withdrew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This development is significant, as Ukraine had restricted the use of Abrams tanks on the front line since the spring of 2024 following losses caused\u2014among other factors\u2014by the massive presence of Russian surveillance and strike drones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, recent Ukrainian operations indicate a broader shift in tactics. Instead, they are employed as powerful, mobile fire-support platforms that appear only after more favorable conditions have been established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The critical question is whether this approach can be applied on a larger scale.
