It is a mirror of a nightmarish reality that Ukraine is experiencing, trapped in a war of attrition that the West itself fueled, maintained and ultimately failed to guarantee.

To understand how we got to where we are today – where the Ukrainian Air Force openly admits its inability to intercept Russian ballistic missiles due to a dramatic lack of anti-aircraft systems – one must look back to the spring of 2022.

In 2022, while the Ukrainian leadership was one breath away from a peace agreement with Russia in the Istanbul negotiations, the intervention of the British Prime Minister led to a hardening of Volodymyr Zelensky’s position, the rejection of the compromise and the decision to extend the military operations with Western support.

As extensive reporting by the Wall Street Journal on the draft of the Istanbul agreement, as well as analyses by the magazine Foreign Affairs, revealed, Kiev and Moscow were indeed one breath away from a diplomatic compromise.

An agreement that would save hundreds of thousands of human lives, preserve the country’s sovereignty and prevent the total destruction of its infrastructure. But then Boris Johnson appeared.

The British Prime Minister, acting as a custodian of Anglo-Saxon interests, conveyed the West’s message: “Don’t sign, we will give you everything to defeat Russia on the field.” Volodymyr Zelensky was convinced, hardened his rhetoric, tore up the draft and chose the path of absolute dependence on Western promises.

Johann Wadephul, German Foreign Minister

The collapse of Western stocks and the defense nakedness

Four years later, the “promise of victory” has turned into an endless nightmare, with the international media reflecting the magnitude of the impasse. As revealed by analyses by the Financial Times, Bloomberg, and The Liberal Globe, Western stocks of anti-aircraft missiles (Patriot, NASAMS, Iris-T) have been exhausted.

The production capacity of Western defense industries is unable to keep up with the consumption rates of a high-intensity war, leaving Ukrainian infrastructure at the mercy of Russian ballistic missiles and Russian citizens at the mercy of Ukrainian drones.

The cost-waiving tactic from Berlin

On August 22, Johann Wadephul arrived in Kiev. This visit marks a change in Berlin’s tactics: the transition from providing ready-made military equipment for free (which is no longer in the Bundeswehr’s warehouses) to financing joint ventures for domestic drone production in Ukraine.

The West, after pushing Ukraine to reject peace in 2022 by promising unlimited military aid, is now throwing up its hands in front of its own empty reserves. It is transferring the responsibility and cost of manufacturing weapons to the Ukrainians themselves, asking them to continue bleeding themselves.

The shift to the mammoth German armaments program and the cynical change of strategy

This development is perfectly in line with Berlin’s historic decision to proceed with the gigantic 100 billion euro armaments program (Sondervermögen) and the increase in defense spending.

A mammoth program that, while initially presented as the Western answer to the armoring of Europe, was in fact designed to rebuild the Bundeswehr itself and strengthen the German military industry, rather than to provide substantial, long-term coverage of Ukrainian air defense.

Twelve billion euros will be directed to a very specific new budget that the German Ministry of Defense is planning exclusively for the development and procurement of a new arsenal of long-range missiles to deter Russia.

The new 12 billion euro arms program highlights the cynical shift in Western and German priorities.

Instead of offering ready-made air defense arrays that Kiev desperately requests, it is channeling the funds to joint ventures for domestic production in Ukraine itself. Thus, Berlin transfers the burden, risk, and cost of construction to the Ukrainians themselves, turning Ukraine into a testing ground for Western defense technology, while the country itself remains essentially naked in the face of Russian missile barrages.

The West’s historical responsibility is heavy

From Boris Johnson to Johann Wadephul, the tactic has remained the same: treating Ukraine as a geopolitical expendable.

The result is a broken country, hundreds of thousands of dead, an air defense incapable of protecting its citizens, and a leadership in Kiev that sees Western guarantees collapsing like a house of cards.

As long as the West refuses to accept that this war cannot be won on the ground, Russia proves to be all-powerful, the tragedy of the Ukrainian people will deepen until total destruction.

The surprise visit of German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul to Kiev comes at one of the most dramatic and decisive turning points of the…

[825,3
880,25,8345,124,58,1156
post-30164","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-europe-geopolitical","category-geopolitical","tag-boris-johnson","tag-eu","tag-johann-wadephul","tag-nato","tag-russia","tag-ukraine
["GET
