The World Wide Fund (WWF) in an official report of the \u00abLiving Planet Report 2020\u00bb (www.livingplanet.panda.org<\/a>) points out that in less than half a century (1970-2018) our planet has lost two-thirds of its wildlife and natural ecosystems respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, this is due to the usual suspicious factors which are the explosive growth of trade and consumption accompanied by a corresponding giant population of humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conclusions of this WWF report are derived from the use of The Living Planet index. This indicator is developed in collaboration with the Zoological Society of London and considers approximately 4000 vertebrate species spread over approximately 21000 animal populations around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The index records an acceleration in biodiversity decline which was 60% in WWF’s previous Living Planet Report 2018 and referred to the period 1970-2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marco Lambertini, Director General, WWF International emphasizes the importance of how humanity\u2019s increasing destruction of Nature is having catastrophic impacts not only on wildlife populations but also on human health and all aspects of our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This shows us that humanity consumes more natural and artificial resources each year than the Earth can reproduce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By adding climate change together with the rise in the temperature of the planet’s atmosphere and sea respectively as well as the deforestation of huge areas offered for agricultural cultivation, it is exacerbating for the worse the remaining natural ecosystems, with the result that the remaining percentage of the remaining wildlife is expected to be lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WWF typically points out that losses reach 84% for freshwater species (fish, birds, amphibians, mammals, etc.), while some regions of the world suffer a higher price, such as the tropics of Central and Latin America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, the study published in the journal Nature titled \u00abBending the curve of terrestrial biodiversity needs an integrated strategy\u00bb David Leclere, Michael Obersteiner, Lucy Young, www.nature.com<\/a> shows proposals and strategies that will slowly and steadily lead to the increasing protection of nature or species, but also to the requisition of ecosystems if a large part of humanity chooses for consumption products that do not come from livestock production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, if a restriction is imposed on the growth of the human population and a shift to livestock products, in addition to the gradual reduction of CO2<\/sub> emissions that create the greenhouse effect, the specter of hunger will be avoided, particularly in Third World populations, while reducing the prices of food and non-food products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UN should flag this WWF forum report and be discussed in all forums concerning the environment and the ecosystem of the planet, while pressing governments to adopt strategies and policies to reverse this adverse current and future phenomenon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
