And in the upper air defence zone, ballistic missile interceptor systems are placed, followed by long- and medium-range weapons, while lower down, mobile SHORAD (Short Range Air Defence) units with guns and smaller missiles are deployed, plus electronic warfare systems and means of countering drones.

This is the real European “Domed”. It consists of national systems of different origins, which are connected to the NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence System (NATINAMDS) which combines sensors, command and control means and weapons systems, so that the detection of a target is transferred to the most appropriate available interceptor

Arrow 3: The Strategic Upper Zone

Germany is the first European country to deploy a true upper anti-ballistic zone with Arrow 3. The system achieved initial operational capability in December 2025 and is intended to intercept long-range ballistic missiles before they re-enter the atmosphere.

Arrow 3 is an extra-atmospheric hit-to-kill interceptor. It destroys the target through direct kinetic impact and operates at much higher altitudes than Patriot, SAMP/T NG or David’s Sling. Interception at high altitude increases the available time margin and allows for more opportunities for engagement along the trajectory.

The system is linked to long-range radars, which detect the launch, calculate the trajectory and estimate the impact point. The interceptor is launched only when the threat is predicted to hit a protected area or critical target. This feature limits the consumption of highly accurate missiles.

The Arrow 3 remains a specialized weapon. Aircraft, drones and cruise missiles are assigned to the lower layers.

Patriot: Long-range air defense and tactical anti-ballistic protection

The Patriot remains the backbone of long-range air defense in several European countries. Its value lies in the ability to use different interceptors against aircraft, cruise missiles and tactical ballistic missiles.

The PAC-3 MSE uses hit-to-kill technology and a two-pulse solid-fuel engine. The second pulse provides additional energy in the final stage of the engagement, increasing altitude, range and maneuverability against fast ballistic targets.

The Patriot was designed around a powerful but sectorial radar covering a 120-degree arc. This requires proper orientation to the main threat axis. However, there is the new generation of radar, LTAMDS with three AESA antennas for true 360-degree coverage and is designed for complex attacks with aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, ballistic and hypersonic targets.

A Patriot can receive warning from a different ground-based radar, early warning aircraft or allied sensor, as long as the data has the required accuracy and reaches the command system in a timely manner.

Cobra 600, unmanned interceptor with IRIS-T missile

IRIS-T: Three interceptors in the same ecosystem

The most important medium-range element of the European Sky Shield Initiative (in which Greece participates but does not follow in the selection of systems) is the IRIS-T Surface Launched missile family. Its architecture is based on a common command system, decentralized launchers and different interceptors for each distance.

The IRIS-T SLS Mk4 version has a maximum range of 12 km and a coverage height of up to 6 km. Radar, electro-optical system, control center and launcher can be placed on the same vehicle, creating an autonomous unit with a very short deployment time.

The IRIS-T SLM uses a larger solid-fuel engine, inertial navigation and two-way data link. The missile receives corrections during flight and activates its infrared sensor in the final stage. The operational configuration is usually reported to have a range of about 40 km and an altitude of 20 km, but the range reaches up to 60 km.

The IRIS-T SLX, which is being developed, is intended for a range of up to 80 km and an altitude of about 30 km. Its addition expands the zone of engagement without a separate training, support and command ecosystem. Therefore, the selection of an interceptor is based on distance, altitude, speed, target value and cost of engagement.

The primary sensor of the IRIS-T SLM is the Hensoldt TRML-4D radar. It is a mobile AESA radar, capable of tracking more than 1,500 targets simultaneously. The reported tracking range exceeds 120 km for fighters and 60 km for hypersonic missiles, depending on altitude, radar cross section and engagement conditions.

The launchers can be deployed far from the radar and the operations center. The arrangement increases the protected area, makes it difficult to simultaneously destroy the entire unit and allows firing from a different point than where the primary sensor is transmitting.

The multi-layered configuration of the SAMP/T NG combines the Aster with VL MICA and foresees the future integration of very short-range weapons. Image: Eurosam.

SAMP/T NG creates second European core

The German approach is based on IRIS-T, Patriot and Arrow. At the same time, France and Italy are developing a second large European medium-range air defense core, around the SAMP/T NG and the Aster 30 B1NT missile.

A complete SAMP/T NG unit can have up to six launchers with eight Asters each, i.e. up to 48 missiles ready for firing. The multifunctional AESA radar has a declared ability to detect and identify targets at distances of more than 350 km. The unit can become operational in less than 30 minutes.

The ASTER 30 B1NT is designed for aircraft, cruise missiles, anti-radar missiles and medium-range ballistic targets. It uses an active radar sensor and the PIF-PAF lateral thruster system, which offers very high flexibility during final approach.

The French configuration also integrates the VL MICA NG missile into the SAMP/T NG, so that the same command center can handle lower-cost and longer-range interceptors. In a subsequent phase, the connection of the Mistral 3 and anti-drone means is planned. The SAMP/T NG is thus transformed from a long-range system into a multi-layered weapons family.

The choice of the SAMP/T NG by additional European countries confirms that the “Doom” of the continent will be developed around more industrial cores. The common requirement is connection to the NATO network, not the use of the same missile or radar by each state.

Skyranger and NNbS: Defense below 10 kilometers

The European short-range interception zone is developed around guns, small missiles, jammers and special C-UAS radars. Here, the German NNbS program connects the IRIS-T SLM with mobile short- and very short-range units. At its core is the Skyranger 30 gun on an armored Boxer 8×8.

The turret is equipped with a 30×173 mm gun, programmable airburst ammunition, radar, electro-optical means and missiles. The explosion of the projectile in front of the target creates a cloud of metal elements and increases the probability of destroying small drones, without requiring a direct hit.

This category is of immediate interest to Greece. BARAK MX, David’s Sling and Patriot units require organic protection from FPV drones, loitering munitions and small missiles. Without guns, electronic warfare and SHORAD on the perimeter, the radar, command centre and refuelling vehicles remain exposed.

European air defence is moving from the logic of anti-aircraft batteries, usually local or regional, to a networked, multi-layered architecture that can reach full…

[1808
4276,6236,25,124
post-30040","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-defense-space","tag-air-defence","tag-dome","tag-eu","tag-nato
["GET
