Who is served by the back-and-forth in the American President’s statements?

Very productive talks are still taking place and something is happening and we are back to square one. Weapons are being used again and some are launching targeted strikes against the Islamic Republic. Trump is launching new threats to flatten Iran. The rhetorical game regarding war with Iran with President Trump’s statements has clearly become tiresome.

It is logical to wonder who is leading and what this bad joke means. Or is it not so funny after all? Can we draw some conclusions that make sense, in the midst of a situation that increasingly seems absurd? However absurd it may seem, our interest must be focused on the broader strategic game that is unfolding.

What are the protagonists’ aspirations. What is at stake the next day. Because this also determines Iran’s predisposition to take risks or seek a way out… Some of the elements that relate to the answer to these questions are not new. They have been mentioned before. With other pretexts given by the war in Iran. Once the regime in Tehran demonstrated resilience and did not collapse, the game changed. And “the wet one is not afraid of the rain.” Critical military infrastructure may have been leveled and the economy may have suffered great damage.

The Time to Measure the Gravity of Decisions

Right and obvious. However, anyone who wants to avoid making a fool of themselves by consuming convenient interpretive schemes without chewing, understands that this should be weighed against the rallying of a part of Iranian society that did not have a particularly positive attitude towards the regime around the leadership before the attack. For the simple reason that their attitude towards the US was not positive either, while they obviously did not see the American and Israeli military tool as a solution to their problems.

In addition, they should weigh it against the impact of the image of successful resistance against the most powerful military machine on the planet, the American one, combined with that of a country that is likened to ancient Sparta, Israel. “Successful resistance” in the sense of denying the opponent his – even if unacknowledged – basic objective, regime change!

This impact is in every direction. To the countries of the wider region that were included in the Iranian retaliatory strikes and are already bleeding very seriously, with no visible sign of a reversal of the trend. To other countries, to other geopolitical regions of the planet, with other balances, where there are allies and adversaries of the US. An example is North Korea. And ultimately, to the entire planet, since the consequences are global!

But it will also have to measure it against the US itself and the relations the day after the war. Today’s message from Tehran is “you will respect”. It is that Washington will have to learn to coexist with countries that it does not control! It is a message that concerns the finite value of the military tool in international relations.

This value is now being questioned in practice, as the era of drone warfare seems to offer the weaker side the opportunity to short-circuit, if nothing else, the achievement of the strong side’s goals in the field and impose serious costs on it.

Resilience also concerns the powerful

The undermining of the credibility of Trump’s repeated threats of leveling, but mainly to explain why the American president has backed down five times, pretending to have serious diplomatic developments, can be explained by the aforementioned in the previous paragraphs.

And all this amidst a rhetorical scene from Washington at the level of public statements and a minimal presence from the Iranian side. Besides, the real result is what counts, not Trump’s occasional statements that have maximized insecurity and led to elevator behavior, financial markets and oil prices.

At this point in time, it is impossible to evaluate and conclude whether the Islamic Republic wants an agreement to disengage from the war with the US or not, in the current circumstances!

As has been pointed out in the recent past, with the US midterm elections approaching and Trump’s electoral clientele divided over what should be done with Iran, in order for Tehran to give Trump what it wants, it will only do so with the right amount of compensation. This compensation, of course, does not coincide with the interests of Jerusalem, which makes its own strategic calculations.

Many argue that the high chances of success presented to Trump regarding the prospect of regime change played a role in the US’s decision to get involved. They add that this decision was the goal. Because once a country is involved, it is not easy to disengage. This is now also being proven in practice. And if we do not want to blind ourselves, it serves some and not others.

The worst thing, however, is that in the international environment there are many who are carefully observing and analyzing the depletion of US war reserves after their involvement in Iran. Large and small. And they are making their own complex calculations.

Very productive talks are still taking place and something is happening and we are back to square one.
