This does not mean that the US desires a Turkish hegemony.

On the contrary, the American tradition from the time of Henry Kissinger to the present day is based on the balance of power. That is, no regional power should acquire such superiority that it can impose its own terms. For this reason, even if the F-35 is approved for Turkey, Israel will continue to receive even more advanced weapons systems or operational advantages in order to maintain its qualitative superiority.

But there is a second reading. The Trump administration is attempting a strategic rapprochement with Turkey. The logic is that Ankara has the second largest army in NATO, controls the Bosphorus Strait, influences Syria, Libya, the South Caucasus and the Black Sea and should not be pushed definitively towards the Russian or Chinese sphere of influence. From this perspective, the F-35 can be the means of geopolitical reconnection.

Here is where the S-400 issue is connected. If Turkey disengages from the S-400s through a formula acceptable to all sides, Washington has set itself the goal of reintegrating Turkey more firmly into the Western security architecture.

Reiterating Chamberlain’s historical “appeasement”

The comparison can be made as an analogy, but there is no identification. Neville Chamberlain believed that, with limited concessions to Adolf Hitler, he would maintain peace in Europe. The Munich Agreement of 1938 became the classic example of the “appeasement policy”. In the current case, some critics of Trump’s policy argue that the return of F-35s to Turkey, without a substantial change in Turkish strategic behavior, could be perceived as a modern form of appeasement towards Erdogan.

Others, however, argue that this is not appeasement but a realistic balance of power because Turkey is so important geostrategically that the US considers it preferable to keep it close to the West, even with difficult compromises.

Russia is clearly in the Geopolitical game

The S-400 is Russia’s top strategic export, which means that Vladimir Putin would hardly accept a public humiliation, that is, Turkey abandoning the S-400s after American pressure. Therefore, a scenario in which the S-400s are transferred to a third country, or stored out of operational use, or some special formula is created that allows all sides to claim that they are saving their prestige is more likely.

Can there be a trade-off in Ukraine?

Clearly yes. Any arrangement that would allow Russia to maintain its prestige and receive serious trade-offs could be part of a broader US-Russian negotiation, which would primarily include Ukraine, the Black Sea, Syria, or other regional issues.

The deeper picture is that Washington seems to be seeking a triangular security architecture: Israel, Turkey, and Arab partners as different pillars of the same strategic system. This does not mean that the antagonisms between them will disappear; on the contrary, the American goal is to keep them at a level that will not disintegrate Western influence in the region.

Consequently, to the question of whether the US seeks two hegemons in the region, the closest answer is that it does not desire a single power, but two strong and mutually balancing strategic poles.

Their goal is to prevent the absolute dominance of any regional power, whether Turkey, Israel, or any other actor, by maintaining a balance that will serve American interests in the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean.

After the weakening of Iran, the uncertainty in Syria and the changes in the Arab world, the US finds that there is no longer…

[3,834
153,1040,143,70
post-29742","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-geopolitical","category-middle-east-geopolitical","tag-israel","tag-middle-east","tag-turkey","tag-usa
["GET
