With oil prices poised to skyrocket and the specter of poverty looming over the global economy, the planet is holding its breath. This is no longer a simple diplomatic crisis, but a direct push of humanity over the brink of World War III as Trump attempts to impose his will with an “iron fist” on a region that does not forgive mistakes.

The question is no longer whether there will be a backlash, but how complete the destruction that will follow.

The Dangers of Blocking Hormuz

On the surface, the naval embargo is intended to reduce Iran’s ability to finance its defense by cutting off oil export revenues. However, such an operation risks destabilizing global energy markets and sending oil prices soaring again. It also jeopardizes the fragile two-week ceasefire agreed between the United States and Iran last Tuesday (7/4/2026).

Closing the strait entirely would send oil prices even higher than before and put more pressure on the United States from the international community.

Trump’s order reflects his hope that he can apply to Iran the model of his intervention in Venezuela, when the United States captured then-President Nicolas Maduro in a military operation following a naval blockade.

“We’re imposing a total blockade. We’re not going to allow Iran to make money selling oil to people they like and not people they don’t like, or whatever,” Trump said on Fox News Sunday (4/12/2026). “You saw what we did with Venezuela. It’s going to be something very similar, but on a higher level.”

Trump’s threat to close the Strait would not worry the Islamic republic in the short term, with Tehran calculating that a closure puts more pressure on the global economy than on Iran. That’s fine with the Iranians, it prolongs the stranglehold on the global economy,” he said. And the Iranians could close Bab el-Mandeb (a checkpoint off the coast of Yemen) and then the US would have to deal with that too.
Since the start of the war, Iran has made it clear that one of its main goals, as it faces what it sees as an existential battle for its survival, has been to increase the cost of the conflict for the US, its allies and the global economy.

The question then arises as to how closing the straits is going to somehow push the Iranians to open them.

Operational Challenges

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement that the blockade would be “imposed impartially on vessels of all nations entering or leaving Iranian ports and coastal areas, including all Iranian ports in the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman.”

While in Venezuela Trump was able to find a compliant successor to Maduro in Delcy Rodríguez, the new president, the remaining regime leaders in Iran after the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior figures were unwilling to bow to US demands.

Trump’s naval blockade represents a sharp shift from Washington’s strategy of allowing Iran to continue exporting oil as it sought to calm energy markets. It has also tried to make up for the production losses suffered by its Gulf neighbors as a result of the closure of the straits and Iranian attacks on their oil and gas facilities.

Iran’s Alternatives

However, it should be noted that Iran has alternatives to bring in food and other goods, as it shares borders with 15 countries, including land routes to Iraq and Turkey in the west, Central Asian states and Russia in the north, and Afghanistan and Pakistan in the east.

Hormuz plunges the market into extreme chaos…

The escalation of the global energy crisis is now out of control, amid the US and Israel’s conflict with Iran and the impact on the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz.

Oil markets are under intense pressure as refiners and traders compete to secure readily available cargoes while supply remains tight due to the conflict in the region.

The North Sea Brent market, the world’s largest, saw intense activity last week, with dozens of bids for cargoes, few of which were accepted due to a lack of available oil.

Cargoes due for delivery in the coming weeks were traded at prices exceeding $140 per barrel.

The increased demand from refiners and traders around the world reflects a significant reduction in supply, mainly due to restrictions on passage through the Strait of Hormuz since the start of hostilities.

US President Donald Trump has ordered a suffocating naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, turning the world’s most critical energy passage into a…

[3,834,826
7987,655,160,7355,1180,70,1915,6002
post-28702","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-geopolitical","category-middle-east-geopolitical","category-usa-geopolitical","tag-blockade","tag-donald-trump","tag-iran","tag-maduro","tag-oil","tag-usa","tag-venezuela","tag-world-war
["GET
