Asymmetric wars defy this rule of “decisive battle.” And there was no reason to believe that Iran would be an exception.

A civilization driven by ideological zeal and having endured centuries of wars of survival was never going to surrender easily. A country that sacrificed some 750,000 of its citizens, including thousands of children, in its eight-year war with Iraq in the 1980s, has always had a huge advantage over enemies that collapse under the emotional weight of a few dozen body bags.

While the US and Israel have eliminated much of the Islamic Republic’s political and military leadership and destroyed much of its military capability, the regime has waged a war of attrition against the global economy.

As any capable military planner would have predicted, Iran has blocked passage through the vital Strait of Hormuz and ensured that its Houthis allies are ready to close the only alternative, Bab al-Madeb.

Add to that strategic drone and missile strikes, and Iran has largely managed to offset the military advantage of its enemies. In the process, Iran has also managed to boost its budget: it now earns almost twice as much from oil sales as it did before the war, while also reaping profits from taxes on ships passing through the Strait.

Russia has also benefited, thanks to the easing of US sanctions on its oil. Meanwhile, the revenues of America’s Gulf allies have collapsed, raising questions about whether they will be able to meet their commitments to invest billions of dollars in the US and their own economic diversification strategies.

“They Failed to Succeed”

To sum it up, the United States and Israel have failed to achieve any of their war goals (please also read the analysis titled “The US and Israel have failed to achieve their intended initial Geopolitical Goals against Iran“).

Even the opening of the Strait of Hormuz cannot be considered a victory, since it was open before the war. Iran’s ballistic missile capabilities and its stockpile of enriched uranium remain a problem to be addressed through diplomacy, as they were before the war.

And the upcoming negotiations in Islamabad are not going to result in an American ultimatum: the Iranians can still teach American negotiators a lesson, especially since Donald Trump wants to cut his losses and turn his attention to the politically crucial domestic front and the neglected East Asian theater.

In terms of regime change, although different figures now lead Iran, they are no more moderate than their predecessors. On the contrary: the Islamic Republic has transformed into a pure military dictatorship, with the ayatollahs providing religious legitimacy to the hardline Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The regional consequences are no more favorable for the United States and Israel. War is certain to lead to a reshuffle of the geopolitical map of the Middle East.

The ties between the countries that most openly challenge the West-centric world order—China, Iran, Russia, and North Korea—may strengthen and their resolve harden.

At the same time, the Gulf states, which have borne the brunt of Iran’s retaliation, may begin to view American military bases as more of a burden than an effective deterrent and move to diversify their alliances.

They may consider aligning with a regional power such as Turkey, which already maintains relations with the Gulf Cooperation Council, or Pakistan, which has a defense treaty with Saudi Arabia and has shown a willingness to share its nuclear know-how with Islamic states.

In fact, the likelihood of nuclear proliferation in the Middle East has now increased, as leaderships in Iran and elsewhere come to view nuclear weapons as the ultimate guarantee of security.

Iran will also continue to bolster its proxies in Iraq, Lebanon, and Yemen, exploiting state failure—and the West’s diminished appetite for state building—to strengthen its regional strongholds.

As for Israel, unless it holds Benjamin Netanyahu accountable for leading the country to the brink of disaster, its democracy is doomed.

With his violent and ill-conceived policies, he has dismantled a once-cohesive society and undermined Israel’s standing in the United States to such an extent that alienating Americans constitutes a strategic threat (please also read the analysis titled “Netanyahu may prove to be the curse of Hebrewism!“).

His attempt to use Iran to distract from Israel’s escalating brutality toward the Palestinians, which has been crucial to Netanyahu’s political survival, further exacerbates the disaster.

During the Cold War, the late American diplomat and strategist George Kennan recognized that internal dysfunction and external overexpansion would lead the Soviet Union to its own collapse.

So he formulated a containment strategy, focused on deterring Soviet expansion while avoiding an unnecessary military confrontation.

The same strategy could have worked against the Islamic Republic, which would sooner or later collapse under the weight of its internal contradictions.

Instead, the United States and Israel embarked on a confrontation that was never going to do them any favors. And while the United States might be able to absorb the shock of yet another defeat in an asymmetric war, Israel is not a superpower, regardless of what is believed.

Let there be no doubt: the ceasefire agreement seals the strategic defeat of the US-Israeli alliance in Iran.
