According to the official rhetoric, it wants to become a producer and not a consumer of security, transitioning to the new era. This is what the Trump administration is also asking for. Unfortunately, however, geopolitical idealism is still omnipresent on the Old Continent, while on the other side of the Atlantic, the handling of the “transition” risks repeating the mistakes that in practice nullified another, earlier, green transition.

But reality… it is impossible to escape. And reality is determined by geographical and strategic factors, not by desires and preferences. No matter how much the graphic representative of European -supposedly- foreign policy, Estonian Kaja Kallas, vice-president of the European Commission, wishes it, Russia is not going to move from its position. As is Turkey for Greece. To make the point clear…..Can anyone imagine what would have happened in Brussels and elsewhere, if a Greek in Ms. Kala’s position had confronted Turkey by attempting to demonize it? So, the sooner everyone adapts to the reality they have to face, the better. With “spells” and statements that take into account the desirable at the expense of the feasible, the problems of strategic balances are not addressed. Ultimately, of survival itself. Because at the time of crisis…

As mentioned at the beginning of the analysis, Washington’s stance has destabilized Europeans. However, although it is a cliché, it is good to remember that any strategic plan, no matter how intelligent, is by definition at risk if the tactical moves for its implementation are not characterized by similar clarity.

Simply put, if Washington’s strategic plan is to coerce Europeans to assume their responsibilities in the field of defense, without affecting their own control over Europe, the “clumsy” implementation could seriously damage the transatlantic bond. However, it is obvious that in Washington’s strategic planning, the extent of the fanaticism of today’s European leaderships has been taken into account!

As “inelegant” as it may be considered, this detail lends it realism… This European idealism ultimately dictates the choices, but has also led to the diminution of alternative options. The same would apply in the case of any other geopolitical twin of international politics! The actions of one side are evaluated by the other, which then shapes -based on them- its own choices.

As mentioned at the beginning of the analysis, Washington’s stance has destabilized Europeans. The same would apply to any other geopolitical twin of international politics! The actions of one side are evaluated by the other, which then shapes -based on them- its own choices.

An example

As soon as India noticed a shift in American policy towards its main security threat, Pakistan, it automatically warmed up relations with Russia. Without a rupture in India-US relations, the prospect of considering the candidacy of the fifth-generation fighter F-35 was almost abandoned and discussions about Russian modern fighter aircraft took its place. At the same time, Vladimir Putin was received with great honors in the country.

In general, New Delhi used the good old recipe of international politics, finding a way to impose a cost on Washington. Without announcing anything hastily, the Indians are sending signals to the Americans consistent with their displeasure. The well-known eternal game of politics between the great powers.

In the past, a window of great reinforcement of arms cooperation with the Americans had opened, when the Russians strengthened their ties with the Chinese, but also secondarily, when Moscow strengthened bilateral relations with Pakistan for strategic reasons. In the arms sector, it provided RD-93MA engines for Pakistani fighters of Chinese origin (JF-17 Block III), although rumors that had developed that they were discussing the concession of S-400 systems were never verified.

AH-64 Apache attack helicopters, CH-47 Chinook heavy transport helicopters, C-17 Globemaster III strategic transport aircraft, in addition to C-130J Super Hercules tactical transport aircraft, Q-9B SkyGuardian unmanned aerial vehicles, but also P-8I Neptune maritime cooperation aircraft! American products replaced Russian ones.

European “countermeasures”

But what will happen if we put the European Union in India’s place? The Europeans, with their attitude, either without realizing it or intentionally, legitimized Trump’s assessment of “free riders”. As a collective entity that was moving along, having become comfortable with American security guarantees. When Trump’s Washington became furious, the Europeans, demonstrating unprecedented collective embarrassment, rushed to make jerky adjustments.

However, the general idea of “defensive autonomy” for Europe and the investment of trillions of euros in cutting-edge weapons systems are not enough to cure the problem. If there were collective self-respect in today’s Europe, instead of the heartbreaking image of its leaders in the Oval Office of the White House, there would be leaders of the appropriate… caliber to remind us of a little history. That is, the geostrategic necessity that led the US to the European continent.

The planetary balances may have changed, but the importance of Europe for the US remains. They simply take it for granted and Brussels has contributed greatly to this… Following the model of the triangular relationship between the US-Russia-India, as in the above example, in the event of such an attempt to empty the EU by Washington, it should have been a matter of time before the European Council, at the level of leaders, would decide to start consultations with Moscow!

A key countermeasure should be to explore the possibilities of finding a new arrangement that would concern the continent’s security architecture, since the loss of American interest should be considered a given. How would this be dealt with in Washington? If the American stance strikes at the core of the “ideological” envelope of the Western alliance, then, necessarily, the review should include the entire problem.

Was it based on this logic, albeit with a characteristic delay, that the French president clearly stood for the first time, after many years, in favor of an attempt to revive diplomatic dialogue with the Kremlin? It is astonishing how the self-proclaimed “Europeanists”, despite denouncing Washington, remain faithful to the ideological approach of confronting Moscow with purely military means.

Unfortunately for everyone, most of the ideological European expectations for Russia after the invasion of Ukraine have been flatly denied. Indeed, one strategy is “resilience” in the current stance, with the bet being who will collapse first.

However, internal political developments in Europe and the enormous time gap from building reliable and purely European military capabilities, rather place this option in the category of “desirable” than “feasible”. So, the approach that has been chosen in itself torpedoes collective security and throws grist into Trump’s mill, justifying the strategy of exerting suffocating pressure on Europe! Greater than the corresponding one on Vladimir Putin’s Russia!

Europe, are you listening?

Unfortunately, in modern Europe, the leaderships are -still- unable to understand that anyone who approaches global security in terms of “love vs. hate” is simply foolish and dangerous. In the case of the Old Continent, as has been demonstrated, it leads with mathematical precision to transatlantic enslavement. This will be the only alternative tomorrow, if Europe continues to behave as if it were going through… the most turbulent period of its adolescence. With everything that may accompany this.

“Great Power Politics” is not going to disappear because today’s leaderships seem to be internationally illiterate. They seem as if they were never taught what determined the planetary balances in the post-war world. Balances that are not a given in today’s transitional world. The real “currency” of the era remains power, not justice. In Darwinian terms, species that are unable to adapt to conditions simply disappear.

Clearly panicked by Trump’s attitude towards it, the United Europe is planning its future in the field of security and defense.
