Both warring sides are accused of war crimes.

But especially after the recent occupation of the western part of Sudan by the RSF, thus dividing the northeastern African country in two, reports of atrocities have taken on nightmarish proportions.

A key point of reference is the gold-rich Darfur, in the west, where everything indicates that another genocide is underway – the second in the region in the 21st century – against the minority, non-Arab local population.

Minors, even small children, have been subjected to sexual violence. The number of those who have been kidnapped remains unknown. The girls as sex slaves – rumors now report that a slave market has even opened west of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur. The kidnapped boys are intended to be soldiers or workers in the gold mines.

Human trafficking, child recruitment

Adding to the nightmare in Sudan, the latest report by UN human rights experts paints a grim picture of the crisis that has been unfolding for two and a half years before the eyes of the entire world.

“There is overwhelming evidence that women and children belonging to non-Arab communities in North Darfur have been targeted and raped on the basis of ethnicity,” they stress.

They express deep concern about reports of human trafficking in and around El Fasher.

They speak of “a pattern of arbitrary detention and forced marriage of women and children for sexual exploitation.”

“The exercise of ownership over victims in this context is indicative of sexual slavery,” they observe. They cite information about the trafficking of women and girls, not only in the West.

Sexual violence is widespread in many parts of Sudan, they explain. They warn of the increasing risks faced by women and unaccompanied children in particular.

All the more so when it is estimated that 27% of displaced minors are under the age of five. Already more than two million little innocent souls…

“Internally displaced women and girls are among those trafficked for sexual slavery and other forms of sexual exploitation. The recruitment and use of children by armed groups is also on the rise,” the experts underline.

Since October 2023, the UN has reported that RSF has been recruiting vulnerable children, especially those who are poor or unaccompanied. Two years later, they are now acting in public.

In videos that circulated online last October, during the capture of El Fasher by paramilitary forces, child soldiers celebrate in front of the camera in panic.

They chase villagers as if they were game. At least one of them is clearly recorded executing an unarmed man in cold blood.

War, patrons and resources

The war in Sudan is estimated to have killed at least 150,000 people – civilians and soldiers – so far, while about 25 million people are suffering from famine, almost half the country’s population.

More than 3.5 million have fled, as the prospect of peace still seems distant.

On the contrary, the front lines are expanding, despite the unilateral three-month “humanitarian” ceasefire that the RSF declared a few days ago and ultimately remained just words.

Their target is now the Kordofan region, which extends across three states in the center and south, is rich in oil and an important transport hub, of strategic importance for the coming day in Sudan.

The RSF advance comes against the backdrop of ongoing mediation efforts by Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and, most notably, the United States, as “peacemaker” President Donald Trump pushes for a ceasefire agreement.

Like other countries, however, they too have a stake in this war, which is raging on the eastern edge of the Sahel belt, in a country with significant reserves of oil and gas, critical minerals and rare earths, as well as access to the Red Sea and critical shipping lanes.

That said, the RSF paramilitary forces have received weapons and drones from the United Arab Emirates, according to UN experts, while the Sudanese army is supported by Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Turkey, according to observers.

During the war, Russia has at times played a “wild card” role, eyeing the acquisition of its first naval base in Africa. All deny any involvement. The Trump administration’s peace initiatives, meanwhile, have become increasingly conditional.

China is closely watching developments, as Port Sudan in particular is a key part of the “One Belt, One Road” Initiative.

Overshadowed in the news and on the international community’s radar by the wars in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip, Sudan, a country of 50.5…

[824,390
7257,3526,7618,1016,2216,1976
post-27073","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-africa","category-politics","tag-child-trafficking","tag-children","tag-darfur","tag-sudan","tag-trafficking","tag-war
["GET
