If so, how?

Within HR (Human Resource Management), as human resources management is internationally known, there is an increasing amount of talk about workplace well-being.

As Anglicizations come and go in the wonderful world of managerial dialect, it is more likely that you will encounter the above term in whole or in part untranslated as “workplace/workplace wellbeing” or with corresponding variations. Because it is easy to get confused with the various “well-somethings”, it is usually clarified that wellbeing differs from wellness, which mainly refers to exercise, healthy eating and leisure activities in general.

Whatever we call it, well-being, well-being or well-being, especially of employees, remains a nebulous concept, susceptible to multiple interpretations. Modern companies, especially large groups, invest in the well-being of employees, or at least that is what they claim in corporate presentations. A definition of workplace well-being could be the following: “well-being is any action by a company that helps employees feel supported in terms of physical, mental, emotional and overall mental well-being. It is anything that motivates, anything that relieves stress, anything that improves working conditions (…) From initiatives to support the physical condition of employees to initiatives for work flexibility and personal development.”

The employer’s perspective is different from the employee’s
A new public opinion survey by the multinational polling company Yougov has shown that employers and employees perceive workplace well-being differently.

The survey, which has just been published, was conducted in July in Great Britain, on a sample of more than 4,000 employees and employers. It was carried out on behalf of the British Safety Council, which is considered one of the world’s leading organizations for Health and Safety at Work (“Keep Thriving: Future of Workplace Wellbeing Survey 2025“).

It was found that while most businesses recognise the importance of wellbeing in the workplace, staff often feel there is less support in this area than employers believe.

“Quality work does not only mean a decent salary, but also job security, good job prospects, an environment where the employee feels useful and which ensures their mental and physical health, and a balanced personal and family life.”

Beware the gap between theory and practice

In the yougov survey in the UK, six in ten employers said that workplace wellbeing was important or very important to their business. However, only 27% of employers felt that their company’s wellbeing strategy was well ‘embedded’ in everyday work. Even fewer employees felt this way, at just 20%.

In contrast, 21% of employees said that their company had no wellbeing strategy, compared to 16% of employers.

Among companies that considered wellbeing ‘very important’, almost two-thirds (65%) had a formal definition of what it meant. This fell to 19% among companies where wellbeing was only considered ‘moderately important’.

Opinion dimension

Employers consistently reported offering more wellbeing measures than employees said they had access to. Almost half of employers (49%) said they offered flexible or remote working, but only 40% of employees agreed. When it came to preventing burnout, 26% of employers said support was provided, compared to just 14% of employees.

The survey also asked employees to rate their overall wellbeing at work. Almost half (47%) said it was average, while over a third (36% overall) rated it as high or very high. Around one in five (18%) reported low or very low wellbeing. Where employees considered wellbeing strategies to be more integrated and mature, scores were higher, with 8% reporting very high and 61% high ‘well-being at work’.

Measures that enhance wellbeing at work

In the recent YouGov survey, both employers and employees showed support for policies that enhance wellbeing at work. The most popular options involved adhering to company legal obligations such as providing at least the minimum statutory holiday pay and adhering to regulations on working hours and workload limits. Even there, there are discrepancies, with 40% of employees and just 29% of employers suggesting these as measures to promote wellbeing.

Risk assessment

The legal obligation to assess risks to occupational well-being was supported by 28% of employees and 23% of employers. It is recalled that in Greece there is no corresponding obligation. The new labor bill establishes the Integrated Information System “Eridanos”, for the digital recording and monitoring of health and safety issues at work and the assessment of “psychosocial risks”. At the same time, however, it introduces regulations that rather undermine than promote occupational well-being, such as increased overtime (13 hours) and the flexibility of working time arrangements, which has been accused of being a form of “unpaid overtime”.

Within HR (Human Resource Management), as human resources management is internationally known, there is an increasing amount of talk about workplace well-being.
