An Airport Like a Small City. British international (London-based) architecture firm Foster + Partners is adding to its global portfolio with the expansion of King Salman International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Construction has officially begun on the project, which will cover an area of approximately 57 square kilometers, with six runways and seven terminals, making it one of the largest airports in the world. The airport is scheduled for completion in 2030 and will have a capacity of 100 million passengers per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGlobal Logistics Hub\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The project is part of the Saudi Vision 2030 plan to transform the country. The airport, located in the capital, which is also the main economic center, is designed to serve as a \u201cglobal logistics hub\u201d and \u201cboost transportation, trade and tourism\u201d in Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The airport will include 12 square kilometers dedicated to residential and entertainment facilities, as well as retail stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Foster + Partners\u2019 Wadi Loop, a green infrastructure connecting landscaping and real estate developments, will make it easier for visitors to move from one point to another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The architectural design, particularly in the main terminal, connects with the natural elements through large windows that frame the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Movement within the terminal has been designed to be seamless and intuitive, while the airport will feature natural ventilation and climate-controlled lighting and will be powered by renewable energy sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Other projects in progress for Foster + Partners include the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum (due for completion this year) and the national memorial to Queen Elizabeth II in London.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" An Airport Like a Small City.
