Due to the now inferior armor of the Leopard 1, Ukrainian specialists have integrated domestic advanced armor packages to enhance their protection against the evolving threats of the modern battlefield.

The Leopard 1A5 is a Cold War-era main battle tank that prioritized firepower and mobility over passive protection. Armed with a 105 mm L7A3 rifled gun equipped with an electronic fire control system (ECC), laser rangefinder and thermal sights, the A5 version offered significant accuracy and speed of engagement for its time.

The MTU MB 838 CaM 500 engine delivers 830 hp, allowing a top speed of 65 km/h and a combat range of 600 km. These tactical mobility characteristics make the Leopard 1A5 suitable for rapid redeployment and maneuver warfare, a critical advantage in the fluid combat zones of Ukraine. It should be noted that a classified study by the German Army, regarding NATO operations in the Balkans, had also established the operational suitability of the Leopard 1A5 in this specific geographical context.

The Armor Problem

However, the Achilles heel of the Leopard 1A5DK remains its armor. Designed at a time when tanks were not expected to withstand upper-body hits or precision-guided munitions, the tank’s steel armor, with a maximum frontal thickness of about 70 millimeters, is ineffective against modern threats, such as RPGs with dual warheads in a row, anti-tank guided missiles, loitering munitions (LM) and, above all, “first person view” (FPV) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). These vulnerabilities required immediate adaptation for survivability in the current Ukrainian combat environment.

To bridge this gap, Ukrainian engineers have performed a unique battlefield upgrade by fitting the Kontakt-1 and Nizh Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) to the Leopard 1A5DK. Developed in the Soviet Union, Kontakt-1 consists of canisters of explosives that are detonated upon impact with an incoming enemy projectile. Although outdated, Kontakt-1 remains effective against older anti-tank weapons and has been installed on the turret and roof of tanks.

In addition, Ukrainian forces have integrated Nizh ERA armor – a domestically developed and significantly more advanced system. The Nizh features a non-linear, multi-layered design that allows for better resistance to dual-in-line warheads and minimizes collateral damage between adjacent sections of the ERA armor, which provides a higher level of protection against multiple hits and therefore becomes particularly valuable for protecting vulnerable points of the armured battle tank.

To further enhance the defense against UAVs, protective meshes and metal “grilles” have been installed in sensitive areas of the turret and engine cover. This increases the crew’s chances of survival and limits damage to the tank.

The multi-layered upgrade of the protection level is a milestone in Ukraine’s ability to combine older Western platforms with domestic armor technologies. By combining the Leopard 1A5’s inherent high tactical mobility and fire accuracy with modern protection measures, the Ukrainian Army has extended the viability of these old tanks in front-line operations.

Real lessons learned…

Most importantly, this development demonstrates a broader shift in armored warfare doctrine, where survival now depends on upgrades and flexibility to deal with asymmetric threats, such as LMs and UAV swarms.

The adaptation of Leopard 1A5DK tanks by the 142nd Independent Mechanized Brigade demonstrates not only the ingenuity and capabilities of Ukrainian military engineering, but also the enduring usefulness of old-tech armored platforms when intelligently modernized. At the same time, it is a practical response to the challenges of today’s battlefield, where precision threats require equally sophisticated countermeasures.

It is also of particular interest to watch the following video, which shows the training of the crews of the upgraded version of the Leopard 1A5DK in driving on a 3 km long test track as well as the execution of shots day and night.

In the event that during the course of the track the tank crew makes an error, the instructor orders the rapid evacuation of the tank with the main purpose of familiarizing themselves with the procedure and its execution in the shortest possible time. “The faster they do it, the greater their chances of survival,” the instructor states characteristically.

As soon as the command is heard, the tank is immobilized, the engine is stopped, the crew members evacuate it and, after first securing the hatches (in order to minimize the possibility of a direct attack on the interior of the tank), they seek cover. In the last minutes of the video, training in driving at night is also presented.

The information from the official account of the 142nd Independent Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Army on the reinforcement of the formation with Leopard…

[2362,2845,7,3830
7252,2358,7064,1156,2863
post-25604","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-military-science","category-military-strategy-doctrines","category-research","category-war-in-ukraine","tag-armored-warfare-doctrine","tag-doctrine","tag-leopard-1a5","tag-ukraine","tag-warfare
["GET
