Explosions were reported in cities that host key facilities linked to Iran’s nuclear program. Initial reports indicate that Israel has targeted the homes of Iranian political and military officials, as well as scientists related to its nuclear program. Iranian state television reported that several senior officials were killed, including the head of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hossein Salami, and the head of the Armed Forces, Mohammad Bagheri.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu described the attack, dubbed Operation Rising Lion, as a “preemptive strike,” before declaring a state of general emergency within Israel in anticipation of possible Iranian retaliation. In a speech on Thursday night, Netanyahu detailed a full-scale military operation targeting Iran’s nuclear and missile infrastructure, arguing that it was necessary to stop Iran from building nuclear weapons and vowing that the attacks would continue “for as many days as necessary.” Netanyahu claimed that the attacks succeeded in hitting Iran’s main uranium enrichment facility in Natanz and Iranian nuclear scientists involved in weapons development and Iran’s ballistic missile program.

Multiple explosions hit areas in Hakimiyeh and Tehranpars neighborhoods in eastern Tehran, according to videos obtained by Iran International. pic.twitter.com/XKO2ZCqerN
— Iran International English (@IranIntl_En) June 14, 2025

The attacks come after the US announced a few days ago that it would withdraw personnel from embassies and consulates in the Middle East, while President Donald Trump said that an Israeli attack on Iran could come in the near future. Despite these preparations, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Thursday that “the United States was not involved in the attacks.” However, according to the Times of Israel, the Israeli military says it is coordinating its actions with the US. In his statement, Rubio had said that “Israel informed us that it believes this action was necessary for its self-defense,” adding a warning to Iran that it “should not target US interests or personnel.”

The Israeli attack comes after talks between the US and Iran stalled due to new US demands for the complete dismantling of Iran’s nuclear program. Although U.S. officials have denied involvement in the current attacks, the operation now risks drawing the U.S. into a broader war as Israel braces for possible Iranian retaliation while expanding its own campaign of attacks across Iran.

Although the stated goal of Israel’s operation is to delay Iranian nuclear efforts, we should be skeptical of that goal. Long before the current wave of attacks, U.S. intelligence officials and other analysts had noted the limited ability of Israeli strikes to destroy or significantly delay Iran’s nuclear program. Unlike the nuclear facilities Israel has previously struck in Iraq and Syria, the Iranian program is more advanced, fortified, and spread over a much larger territory. Key Iranian nuclear facilities such as Natanz and Fordow are built under layers of fortified concrete and granite, in some cases literally built into mountains, making them impossible to destroy by any known conventional Israeli military capability.

Thus, we conclude that Israel’s potential inability to completely destroy the nuclear program, despite its ability to strike various targets inside Iran, is effectively aimed at triggering a larger regional war with no defined end point. Such a war could potentially draw the United States into the mix, including defending Israel from Iranian retaliation, even at a time when parts of the Trump administration and domestic politics are expressing deep frustration with fighting the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

“Both the Israeli and American governments, as well as our respective military and intelligence agencies, are fully aware that Israeli airstrikes on Iran will not successfully destroy the Iranian nuclear program. “We’re dealing with underground facilities spread across a large country and human capital that knows how to rebuild things. At best, such attacks would set back progress for a period of months or less than a year,” said Harrison Mann, a former U.S. Army major and senior Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) official for the Middle East/Africa Regional Center. “The only thing you can really achieve by trying to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities is to provoke retaliation from Iran that helps escalate the situation into a larger war and draws the United States in. That’s the goal in any supposed attempt to bomb the Iranian nuclear program.”

The Israeli attacks began after nuclear talks between the United States and Iran began to stall over the issue of allowing Iran to maintain nuclear enrichment for civilian energy purposes. In April, the U.S. envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, publicly stated that such an arrangement might be acceptable to the United States, provided that Trump’s demand that Iran not develop a nuclear weapon was met. After the Iranians expressed their agreement to these terms in public statements, the U.S. position began to shift rapidly. In recent days, Witkoff and others in the neoconservative wing of the Washington foreign policy establishment had begun to demand instead a dismantling of Iran’s entire nuclear program, an issue that Tehran had already indicated was a red line that would destroy the possibility of a diplomatic deal.

Depending on how the cycle of attacks and retaliation unfolds, a conflict with Iran could well set off a larger war. A report this year by the neoconservative Washington Institute for Near East Policy acknowledged that the airstrikes would be only the first phase of a much larger conflict, stating that “subsequent covert action and military strikes to disrupt and delay efforts to rebuild nuclear facilities may be necessary in the months and years following an initial attack.”

Following serious Israeli attacks on its nuclear program, Iran now faces a choice between capitulation, full-scale confrontation, or withdrawal from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the development of nuclear weapons. Given the nature of Iran’s military capabilities, which rely on a vast fleet of ballistic and hypersonic missiles, Iran’s ability to retaliate in a measured manner that would create a deterrent without escalating the situation into a full-scale war is limited.

Depending on its duration, the war could end up causing divisions within Trump’s coalition, divided between America First figures who oppose more wars in the Middle East and neoconservatives for whom attacking Iran has been a long-standing goal. If the war continues for a long time, the US’s ability to avoid a larger conflict will diminish, and Israel’s own pressure on the US to intervene and help continue its campaign will increase.

“There is no viable Israeli option without close American coordination. “Any extensive Israeli campaign must have a central American role in it,” said Trita Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. “The Israelis are not just selling war to America, they are selling endless war to America.”

Israel attacked Iran early Friday morning, targeting the capital Tehran and other parts of the country with multiple airstrikes in a dramatic escalation of…

[3,834,826
160,153,1040,70,1976
post-24741","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-geopolitical","category-middle-east-geopolitical","category-usa-geopolitical","tag-iran","tag-israel","tag-middle-east","tag-usa","tag-war
["GET
