Ukraine has taken a major digital leap and taken a decisive step towards full military integration with the West, gaining access to one of NATO\u2019s most important command and control platforms, a move that could change the nature of the fighting and strengthen the country\u2019s cooperation with the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Ukrainian armed forces have been granted permission to connect to the digital platform Command and Control Center System Interface, also known as \u201cmilitary Wi-Fi\u201d and used by most member states of the Alliance. As reported, this will allow the recently delivered F-16 and Mirage 2000 fighters, as well as the MIM-104 Patriot air defense systems, to exchange data directly with Alliance countries, communicate directly and integrate operationally into Western structures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Full coordination<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This platform is considered vital for extensive operational awareness, necessary for decision-making at the tactical and strategic levels, as well as for effective coordinated action between allied armies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to Ukraine\u2019s deputy defense minister, the country signed a licensing agreement for the use of the system with the aim of strengthening cooperation in the field of air and missile defense and, more generally, increasing the level of operational interoperability with NATO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Military Wi-Fi<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n She stressed that the system uses the Link 16 protocol, which she called \u201cmilitary Wi-Fi.\u201d In the past, Ukrainian fighter jets were not allowed to integrate into Link 16, mainly due to concerns that Russian forces could develop methods to breach it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, access to the Command and Control System may lead to a revision of this decision, improving the operational capabilities of the F-16 and Mirage 2000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Western radars and the army?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n It remains unclear how data exchange will take place without full integration of modern communication channels. However, Ukraine\u2019s entry into the Command and Control system could prove to be particularly valuable, as it paves the way for the deployment of Western radars in the country and possibly Western ground forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NATO satellite network<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Since the mid-2010s, Ukraine has maintained close data exchange with Western countries, and the provision of intelligence and targeting by NATO has played a crucial role in Kiev\u2019s military operations. As early as February 2023, the Kremlin had stated that the entire NATO satellite network supports Ukraine, along with all the related information infrastructure, including aviation and satellite systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How close is the Alliance\u2019s full involvement<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Ukraine\u2019s inclusion in the Command and Control Center System Interface is expected to be a logical continuation of its already existing cooperation with the West, further strengthening its technological and strategic link with the Alliance. Indeed, Ukraine is part of NATO\u2019s digital military nervous system, and this could be decisive for the development of battles on the front.
