A research team from Cornell University in New York has developed an artificial intelligence ring called SpellRing that can recognize American Sign Language (ASL) gestures in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does SpellRing do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n In its current form, SpellRing allows text input on computers and smartphones through gestures, which are used for words without specific meanings, such as names and technical terms. With future improvements, it could record entire sentences in sign language, making translation more immediate and accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Many sign language recognition technologies have not been adopted by the deaf and hard of hearing community because they are bulky and difficult to use. This is a simple ring that can capture the complex finger movements in ASL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How does it work?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Developed at Cornell\u2019s SciFi Lab, SpellRing is worn on the thumb and features a microphone and speaker that emit and receive sounds beyond the audible range. These sounds help map the hand\u2019s movement, while a tiny gyroscope records the overall movement. All of this is built into a ring smaller than a quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The artificial intelligence at the heart of SpellRing processes the sound images and recognizes ASL letters with an accuracy comparable to larger, more complex systems. Tests on 20 users showed accuracy ranging from 82% to 92%, depending on the difficulty of the words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the biggest technical hurdles was training the AI \u200b\u200bto recognize all 26 hand shapes of the English alphabet, as users often vary their movements for speed and comfort.
