On 19 February 2025, Australian Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy spoke at the ADM AUKUS Pillar II conference in Canberra, focusing on defence policy and cooperation with the US and the UK. He said the Australian government had signed 19,000 contracts worth AUD 26.1 billion with local industry, a 12% increase on 2023. The defence industry’s contribution to the economy increased by 4.1%, while employment in the sector grew by 4,000 jobs, reaching 100,000 jobs. Equipment spending increased by 16%, from AUD 14.4 billion to AUD 16.7 billion, while maintenance and support spending rose by 12%, from AUD 14.5 billion. to $16.3 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of the total funding, at least $22 billion was spent on domestic industry, the highest amount recorded to date in Australian history. He noted that these funds reflect real economic activity within the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Conroy stressed that, despite the successes, it is not possible for all businesses to win the tenders they want, but the government remains committed to strengthening domestic industry and supporting the Armed Forces with modern equipment. As he said, \u201cover the last two and a half years we have implemented the Strategic Defence Review at a rapid pace, which has led to the development of the National Defence Strategy 2024 and the Integrated Investment Program (IIP) 2024, which has enabled an additional $60 billion in investment over a decade, bringing the total available funding (for the IIP) to $330 billion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The National Defence Strategy (NDS) and the Defence Strategic Review (DSR) have brought about the most significant reforms to the Australian Army since the 1960s. One of their key highlights is the extension of the range of long-range strike weapons, from 40 km. to over 500 km, with the aim of reaching 1,000 km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In parallel, the Navy’s surface fleet is planned to double, from 11 to 26 warships, as the Sea 3000 program, announced in February 2024, has matured considerably and within 10 months has resulted in the two final designs of the competition (the Japanese frigate Improved Mogami and the German Meko A200), while the final decision will be made within the next 12 months. The program has an initial budget of 10 billion dollars, with the first delivery expected in 4.5 years from the start and construction to be carried out in local shipyards, as is already the case with other shipbuilding programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
