Even under Joe Biden, when Boris Johnson was Prime Minister of Britain, London followed an independent policy in its relations with Kiev, which did not always align with the American strategy. Furthermore, shortly after Donald Trump took office, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was heavily criticized by Elon Musk.

Overall, the new US administration’s relations with London are particularly tense and have only begun to show some signs of easing in recent weeks.

The Anglo-Saxon Conflict Theory and Ukraine

Within this context, a new theory of geopolitical affairs has been developed, according to which world events are determined by an underground conflict between the United States and Britain.

According to it, the British are forming a broad anti-American alliance, in which Europe, Turkey, China and India are allegedly participating. As part of this strategy, the British – always according to this theory – are attempting to torpedo American efforts for a quick end to the war in Ukraine and the restoration of relations with Russia. Their goal is allegedly to prevent Washington from strengthening through a possible rapprochement with Moscow, which would make the United States stronger in its international confrontation with Britain.

In fact, this theory extends to the internal political processes in Ukraine, presenting the developments in the country through the prism of the US-UK rivalry. For example,

Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, is considered a pro-British man.

On the contrary, David Arakhamia and Kirill Budanov, who are opposite him in the internal political conflict, are considered pro-American men.

Regarding Valeriy Zaluzhny, some believe that he is “British”, as he now serves as ambassador in London. Others believe that he is “American” and that Zelensky deliberately sent him to Britain so that he would be under the supervision of the Londoners.

Like any theory of this type, the one about a “global war of influence” between the United States and Britain is based on certain real facts.

The Historical Rivalry Between the United States and Britain and Geopolitical Developments in the Middle East

Let us begin with the fact that, contrary to the widespread stereotype of an Anglo-Saxon alliance, relations between the United States and Britain have been tense or even hostile for most of history. On many issues, the two countries have essentially become bitter rivals.

In fact, the American state was born out of the war of independence from the British crown.

Then, the British fought against the Americans again in the early 19th century.

A long confrontation between the two powers followed in the struggle for influence and control over the newly formed countries of Latin America.

After World War II, it was not only the Soviet Union, but also the United States, that made significant efforts to dismantle the weakened British colonial empire.

The Americans systematically sought to displace the British from key geopolitical points in the world, such as the Middle East. A typical example is the Suez Crisis of 1956, when it was the United States that prevented Britain and France from regaining control of the Suez Canal, which had been nationalized by Egypt. The United States, in effect, forced London and Paris to stop their military operation.

Only from the 1970s onwards did relations between Britain and the United States become truly close. This happened when London came to terms with the loss of its imperial status and fully aligned itself with Washington.

The return of old power centers and London’s independent policy in the Middle East

However, as the geopolitical power of the United States has weakened over the past two decades, old power centers are reviving, which are attempting to restore their imperial greatness.

Russia and Turkey are moving in this direction. At the same time, London has begun to demonstrate increased diplomatic activity, building relations with many countries—something that does not always go hand in hand with Washington’s plans. A typical example is the Middle East, where there are multiple groups of countries with conflicting interests:

The first group consists of Iran and its allies, which are considered to have close relations with Russia and China.

The second group includes countries oriented towards the United States, such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, as well as Israel, which is the most important ally of the Americans in the region.

The third group consists of the Turkey-Qatar Alliance, as well as organizations such as the Muslim Brotherhood and the Islamists in Syria led by Ahmed al-Sharaa (also known as al-Jolani). After all, both Turkey and Qatar have also provided active support to Hamas, in collaboration with Iran. This group is generally considered closer to Britain.

It is noteworthy that the current head of MI6, Richard Moore, was a British ambassador to Turkey and maintains close relations with Recep Tayip Erdogan.

The geopolitical chessboard: Israel, Syria and Britain’s place in global competition

The situation around Israel and in Syria, after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad, clearly highlights the contradictions and geopolitical conflicts that are underway.

Turkey and Qatar support the new Syrian authorities.

The United States appears dissatisfied with the regime of Ahmed al-Sharaa (al-Julani) and demands a restructuring of the government, in order to better take into account the interests of the different ethno-religious groups in the country.

In addition, there is information that the US and Israel want to maintain Russian military bases in Syria, in order to counterbalance Turkish influence in the region (for more information on this issue please read the analysis titled “Russian bases in Syria are a shield for Israel against Turkey“).

At the same time, Israel maintains a hostile attitude towards al-Julani, as he actively supports the Druze movement, which opposes the new Syrian leadership.

The US and Israel also support the Syrian Kurds, which Turkey perceives as a major threat to its security in Syria.

The outcome of the conflict over Ukraine will decide everything

When it comes to the war in Ukraine, Britain and Donald Trump have different strategies.

Trump seeks to end the conflict as soon as possible, while Britain wants the war to continue.

Keir Starmer has made significant efforts to align the position of the US government with that of London.

However, all these efforts have been nullified by Volodymyr Zelensky, who has engaged in a useless, for him, public confrontation with Trump, worsening relations between Kiev and Washington.

It can therefore be said that Britain is pursuing its own geopolitical strategy, which often does not coincide with the American one and, in some cases, directly contradicts it.

However, some believe with some realism that the theory of a “world war” between the US and Britain does not fully reflect reality, as it overestimates London’s capabilities and influence on global developments.

The asterisk for Britain’s limited capabilities

Today, Britain is in a difficult economic situation. According to British military officials, the army and navy are now at capacity.

The domestic political situation remains unstable, while the large number of immigrants creates tensions that could potentially lead to serious social crises.

In these conditions, Britain does not have the ability to play a leading role in international affairs.

Certainly, London can practice behind-the-scenes politics and mediate, but relations between the great powers are much more important than any role for Britain. This also applies, for example, to the theory that London seeks to create a European coalition against the United States and Russia. First of all, Britain is not a member of the European Union. But that is not even the main issue.

Britain cannot offer Europeans access to the American market or American military protection. Even in relation to Russia, despite the current confrontation, trade relations with the EU are more important than with the UK, given the role of Russian energy for the European economy.

Britain’s weakening in international alliances

In Kiev, there is a popular view that a military-political coalition between Ukraine, Poland, the Baltic states and Britain—a “little Entente”—could be created.

But here the question arises:

Where is the money for this alliance?

Where are the weapons?

Where is the economy that will support such a coalition?

Where are the energy and natural resources that will make it viable?

Another example is Turkey. The Turks do not need British mediators to resolve issues in their relations with their neighbors or with the United States. Recep Tayyip Erdogan does not need Britain to make deals with Vladimir Putin.

The new multipolar world does not fit the decolonial strategy of the Anglo-Saxons

The events of recent years show that the world is in a process of change, fragmentation and regionalization. For each country, relations with its neighbors are becoming more important than relations even with the United States—let alone with Britain. Even Washington is no longer in a position to fully control global developments.

Britain still has the power and ability to provoke tensions and trap countries in conflicts with its geopolitical rivals. However, it cannot then offer any meaningful support to the countries involved in these conflicts—especially if tensions escalate into open war.

As Donald Trump often says in such cases:
“You have no aces up your sleeve.”

The public confrontation between Trump and Zelensky in the White House has significant geopolitical implications, but for some analysts the most crucial aspect it…

[825,3,826
6253,655,3944,216,1156,70,1155
post-23210","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-europe-geopolitical","category-geopolitical","category-usa-geopolitical","tag-anglo-saxons","tag-donald-trump","tag-great-britain","tag-uk","tag-ukraine","tag-usa","tag-volodymyr-zelensky
["GET
