Europe is watching closely. Although it is lagging behind the US and China, it is not sitting idly by.

With the future of efficiency, especially the near future, being intertwined with the mix of the know-how possessed by the worker with the capabilities possessed by artificial intelligence systems, Eurostat’s research on the use of AI technologies in EU businesses is interesting (“Use of artificial intelligence in enterprises“).

In 2024, 13.5% of EU businesses with 10 or more employees will use artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to carry out their work, representing an increase of 5.5% compared to 2023. The highest shares are held by businesses in Denmark (27.6%), Sweden (25.1%) and Belgium (24.7%). At the bottom of the list are Romania (3.1%), Poland (5.9%) and Bulgaria (6.5%).

All EU countries recorded an increase in the share of businesses using AI technologies compared to 2023, with Sweden recording the largest increase of 14.7 percentage points, followed by Denmark (+12.4 percentage points) and Belgium (+10.9 percentage points). In contrast, moderate increases were recorded in Portugal (+0.8 percentage points), Romania (+1.6 percentage points) and Spain (+2.1 percentage points).

Race to catch up

Greek businesses are low in the EU rankings but have made significant progress since 2023, showing that they are keeping pace with the rest by investing in the future of technology.

According to recent Eurostat data, in 2024, in Greece, around 9.8% of businesses with 10 or more employees used AI technologies, an increase compared to 2023, when the percentage was around 7.2%. Despite this increase, Greece still looks to countries that are leading in the adoption of artificial intelligence, such as Denmark, Sweden and Belgium.

Analyzing the data, we see that most Greek businesses use AI technologies for text mining and natural language generation. These technologies allow them to analyze Big Data and create content automatically, which allows them to improve their marketing strategies and customer service.

Big Challenges

While the potential benefits of adopting AI are vast, integrating it into the workplace is not without its challenges. One of the main hurdles is ensuring data quality. Insights from AI solutions are only as good as the training data. Businesses need to invest in data management strategies and cultivate expertise to make the most of their data wealth.

Privacy and security concerns are also high. Understanding and maintaining data privacy is becoming paramount as AI systems process increasingly sensitive information. Companies must prioritize strong security measures and transparent data management practices to maintain the trust of their employees and customers.

Artificial intelligence is constantly gaining ground worldwide, with countries racing to keep up with technological progress.
