In fact, the advent and treatment of the Covid-19 pandemic in the lives of most citizens of the world is a cosmopolitan event that creates many important dynamic and geopolitical developments.

By T.C.

©The law of intellectual property is prohibited in any way unlawful use/appropriation of this article, with heavy civil and criminal penalties for the infringer.

The Asian social model versus the Western social model in the successful treatment of the Covid-19 pandemic

The fact that China is characterised by an authoritarian type of governance with a capitalist economic model has enabled it to implement these authoritarian methods of governance and management by achieving a highly effective response to the pandemic on its territory, giving the forum to many analysts to conclude that China has gained a lead over the West. For the first time, many political analysts reflect this in a future transfer of political power to China.

Nine Dragon Wall in the Forbidden City of Beijing, China
Photo by Seebeer, Source: selbst fotografiert von Seebeer, Public Domain

The fact that China implements systems for digital monitoring of mass populations and the fact that the cultural-philosophical background of Confucianism is what characterizes Chinese citizens and the populations of East Asia in general by voluntarily applying their respect to both the heavenly and terrestrial order respectively, constituted China’s two advantages for the drastic and successful suppression of the pandemic on its territory.

The thought that China’s success in dealing with the pandemic is solely due to the authoritarian rule of the Communist Chinese government is misplaced because the same successful treatment of the pandemic was achieved equally by two other Asian countries characterized by openly democratic constitutions which implement transparency and democratic control practices. South Korea and Taiwan.

The common component of these two countries (South Korea and Taiwan) and China is that the philosophy-culture of their peoples makes them to have absolute respect and obedient to the decisions of their governments.

What has been demonstrated so far is that the Asian social model, which relies more on the easy application of mass population discipline (due to the culture & life philosophy of the East Asian peoples) and their total control through digital mass population monitoring systems, manages to achieve a more effective response to pandemics than the Western social model based more on democratic rights and civil liberties.

At this point we should make a very important notice which also makes a difference to any analysis and approach to the subject under consideration.

The West Europe and the USA, and since 1918 (with the emergence of the deadly Spanish flu) have so far not experienced in their territory terrible pandemics. Because of this, Western countries were completely inexperienced and unprepared as to how they should react and act when faced with pandemic situations such as Covid-19.

What happened to the “unexperienced” in pandemics Europe and USA equally was to fill the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) of the existing healthcare hospitals in a short time, the medical staff respectively to be exhausted equally in short-time and desperately seeking help, resulting in panic both in governments and in all state mechanisms respectively.

Until now the Covid-19 Coronavirus pandemic has taught us that when a pandemic occurs in a country, then the government and the state mechanism of this country (in addition to having to inform the other countries in a timely manner) should in the shortest possible time either convert existing hospital infrastructure into ICU or (the most effective practical method) to create from scratch new temporary hospital infrastructure-ICUs only for the treatment of patients from any emerging pandemic.

In this way, the existing total hospital number of beds and ICUs equally in one country which is available for other patients from other types of illnesses remains untouched without collapsing hospital healthcare system.

Emergency hospital during their long and relatively recent experience of previous pandemics of type H1N1, SARS-Cov1, Ebola virus (in Africa) etc. had the necessary pandemics experience to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.

We can therefore conclude that the successful treatment of the Covid-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic by both communist China and the liberal Republics of Taiwan and South Korea are also due to their extensive experience of facing pandemics for the last twenty years.

Mass-type digital surveillance of citizens in China has an important but not major role in successfully addressing the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic on its territory.

All this leads us to the conclusion that the Western social model, because it has not successfully tackled the Covid-19 pandemic, has so far not meant that it is lagging behind the Asian social model, but simply the lack of experience of West state mechanisms and the cultural-philosophical background of Western citizens based more on democratic rights and less on the culture of discipline is the reason of this insufficient.

The Star of China

On the basis of the above points, it can be said that although the Asian social model has achieved great efficiency in dealing with this pandemic, it is not that element that further highlights China on the international political scene as a model of governance and emergency management.

Diplomatic relations of the People’s Republic of China
Photo by Author: Wylve, Source: Diplomatic relations of the PRC.png, licensed Public Domain

The element that highlights China’s global role through the successful treatment of the pandemic on its territory is the fact that many Western governments have turned to China to meet their vital needs in both medical and nursing equipment such as breathing agents, surgical masks, medical protection equipment and medicines for the medical staff protection and treatment of Covid-19 (Coronavirus) patients.

The fact that China’s production capabilities have met the specific needs of these Western countries has enabled China to develop a new type of diplomacy “the diplomacy of medical masks”, helping the countries of the West, while sending messages of both good will and cooperation but also a strength.

Italy (EU), which was directly assisted by China, is the most typical example of what is said to be when both the EU and the US did not help it at an early stage. But this is due, among other things, to China’s vital strategic interests in Italy, since China and Italy signed an agreement (3 March, 2019) for both the sale of four Italian ports to China and Chinese investments in the Italian economy totaling €21bn, amid a US-China trade war.

This is the main reason why Italy was not directly assisted by the EU and the US in successfully tackling the pandemic on its territory.

A second advantage that China currently has with the successful treatment of the pandemic on its territory is that it is starting to restart its economy from a more advantageous position than the economies of the West. In fact, China has the capability to make full use of its production potential in order to cover the fall in its GDP by the end of the year.

The fact that many believe that if China removes social restrictions to return to normality will receive a second and three-wave pandemic, does not diminish China’s achievement in being ahead of Western countries both in restarting its economy and in fully recording cases, mass diagnostic tests and virus traceability.

So, China’s over described comparative advantages give it greater economic and political prestige than the West, gaining more influence on the international political scene. Whether this will continue rests both on how China manages it and what Western countries will do to regain lost ground.

The US reaction to China’s rise

These two above described comparative advantages that China has gained with the successful treatment of the pandemic in its territory and always in relation to the West countries, they are also the ones that raise concerns for the US, which, because of their non-experience in dealing with pandemics on their soil, as well as Europe, are forcing the US and always in cooperation with the UK and the EU (France) to launch a set of accusations and blames against China in that the virus escaped intentionally through a biological military laboratory in Wuhan city (China).

Chinese Chairman Xi Jinping with US President Donald Trump at the 14th G20 in Osaka, Aug 2019
Photo by The White House from Washington DC, Source: President Trump at the G20, licensed Public Domain

The aim of the US and the West in general is to impose massive restrictions on China’s exports while demanding compensation so that they can “brake” the full growth of China’s production potential and the swift restart of its economy, thereby wanting to snip its newly cut-off comparative advantages.

The Covid-19 pandemic showed that all the countries of the West and of course the US understood how vulnerable they are to having transported all their manufacturing plants to China due its cheap labour cost, and it seems that in the next few years this will be reversed as this process will be followed directly by Japan, one of the key pillars of the US alliance in East Asia.

In this context, the Government of Japan announced the provision in the extraordinary budget to strengthen its economy from the Covid-19 (Coronavirus) crisis, an expenditure of up to $2.2bn to support the movement of high value-added industrial products by Japanese companies from China back to Japan or other countries such as Vietnam, Taiwan, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia etc.

According to a survey by Tokyo Shoko Research Ltd, a company that provides market services, 37% of the approximately 2600 Japanese companies surveyed and industrially operating in China answered a related question that they intend to move their production to a third country and leave China.

This shows Japan’s targeted actions to weaken communist China economically and will obviously be the first of a series of countries to do the same. EU (France) and the UK are expected to follow.

The US seems to have found a way to bring the Red Dragon to its knees and now can alienate the entire Chinese economic model by destroying China’s agreements around the globe.

US President Donald Trump sees it as an opportunity to “squeeze” China once and for all, moving US production from China back to the US.

For these reasons we expect tensions between North Korea, South Korea and Japan to increase in the future through China, and more generally to increase tensions between China and Taiwan along the South China Sea in response to these West’s aspirations.

The concerns about the US over the delayed treatment of the pandemic

In this way West countries will be able to gain any lost ground while dynamically restarting their economies, while maintaining with this strategy their economic and political primacy to date.

US Navy a central computer system monitors the heart rates of each patient in the ICU
Photo by US Navy Photographer’s Mate 1st class Shane T. McCoy, Source: US Navy, licensed Public Domain

The fact that the US has not yet been able to successfully tackle the pandemic on its soil has nothing to do with basic shortcomings in its economic and social model or the leadership of US President Donald Trump whom the media and his political opponents love to hate.

As mentioned in the previous sections, there is a clear lack of experience in the face of pandemics. American doctors are excellent at dealing with all kinds of surgery, gun injuries and all kinds of end-to-life diseases, etc. But until now they had no idea how to deal with a pandemic on American soil and even more had no idea how to wear properly and without making a mistake all their protective equipment.

These figures show a lack of experience and while adapting quickly to the new data they will surely be much more ready to deal with a second and third wave of pandemic in the future and until a vaccine is found.

But what the US has so far highlighted is the weaknesses of the economic-social model and as a point of US administrative model.

There have been serious shortcomings in research and production, problems of coordination between the Federal government and state governments in the name of the political arena, glaring social inequalities, the poorest citizens as the most (Colored and Latin American origin) are the hardest hit by the pandemic, major shortages in the healthcare system which is expensive and private interests dominate.

The question that is openly raised is whether the US can reverse these disadvantages into advantages within a short period of time by regaining its own glamour.

The EU as a weak link in the West

With the US losing political prestige on the international stage over China over its time-consuming pandemic and China achieving comparative advantages over the West, there is theoretically a geopolitical vacuum in the global political firmament that one could say the EU could fill.

EU map with Brexit

But that’s not the case. The reasons for the EU’s failure to deal directly with the pandemic are the same as the reasons mentioned above for the USA. Lack of experience.

EU member countries such as Italy, Spain and France count a huge number of deaths and susceptible cases from Covid-19 pandemic, making the EU more inadequate in dealing with Covid-19 than the US.

At the same time, the Southern Eurozone member countries (Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece) are at risk of facing a new over-indebtedness crisis while seeking financial support and partial mutualisation of their public debt through the issuance of a Eurobond.

Quite rightly, the Northern member countries of the Eurozone are reacting to debt reciprocity and the issue of a Eurobond, on current standards, and propose funding from the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) with budgetary constraints.

When proposing mutualisation of public debt, there should be a balanced annual state budget in each Eurozone member country (as is the case in the states of US respectively) and at the same time all Eurozone member countries should renounce any national veto disposed liable to Brussels as member countries.

But the fact that the Southern member countries of the Eurozone are experiencing the spectre of the deepest recession creates all the conditions to transform them as debt colonies around Germany, which sooner or later Germany will emerge from its own recession and will be even more politically and hegemonically strengthened within the EU.

Therefore, China’s support and the weakening of the US in international political firmament, although they create an opportunity to bring about a new global pole of power, but the weakness of the EU and its internal division do not allow it to fill this gap with claims.

The evolution of the Covid-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic will largely determine the new international-political positions, whether they will be weakened or strengthened, political positions held…

[836,3,826
161,1622,25,252,1532,215,184
post-2242","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-asia-geopolitical","category-geopolitical","category-usa-geopolitical","tag-china","tag-diplomatic-war","tag-eu","tag-japan","tag-pandemic","tag-us","tag-west
["GET
