On November 13 this year, a huge and strategic NATO anti-missile base in Poland, near the village of Redzikowo, was officially put into operation. At this base, the US military installed the powerful and highly advanced Aegis BMD anti-ballistic missile system, also known as Aegis Ashore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given these \u201cinitiatives\u201d and considering the short distance between Ukraine and Poland, one can reasonably ask whether this system could protect Ukrainian territory from Russian ballistic missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can Aegis BMD Protect Ukraine?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To answer this question, we must first look at the technical specifications and capabilities of the Aegis BMD system. The American super-system consists of several components, but perhaps the most important of them is the AN\/SPY-1 radar. This radar is responsible for detecting, tracking, and guiding anti-ballistic missiles to intercept enemy ballistic threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Aegis BMD launches SM-3 anti-ballistic missiles using Mark 41 launch systems. These interceptor weapons encounter their targets outside the atmosphere at speeds greater than 10 km\/second, destroying them and neutralizing the threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each system can fire 24 SM-3 interceptor missiles against 24 different ballistic missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for its range, the Pentagon has not publicly disclosed this crucial parameter. According to military analysts, however, the Aegis BMD system installed in Poland and recently put into operation cannot protect the entire territory of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fortunately for Ukrainians, NATO operates a similar anti-ballistic missile base in Romania. The facility is located near the village of Deveselu and has been operational since 2016. The Aegis BMD protection zone located there extends all the way to the Caspian Sea, theoretically covering almost all of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n

However, even Ukrainian military analysts admitted that it is uncertain whether the American Aegis Ashore anti-ballistic missile system can actually shoot down Russia\u2019s newest ballistic missiles, such as the Oreshnik hypersonic missile launched the day before yesterday against the city of Dnipro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And of course, let\u2019s not forget that NATO must first approve the use of the Aegis BMD system over Ukrainian territory, a decision that is being seriously discussed these days.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
