The design targets the German Navy’s requirement to replace the three Sachsen-class F124 AAW frigates in service by the mid-2030s. The MEKO A-400 AMD will have a full displacement of 10,000 tonnes and are designed around the AEGIS combat system which supports AN/SPY type AESA radar.

The model, which was presented for the first time, is identical to the graphics presented by TKMS as part of its advertising campaign in early July 2024. In addition to the SPY-6 or SPY-7 radar suite, pending the corresponding decision by the Berlin, the ship can accommodate a second radar. The ship model and graphics show a set of rectangular boxes of the SPY-6 radar.

Their purpose would be to integrate weapon systems not integrated into the AEGIS/SPY combination. One such option could include the integration of another combat management system such as the Canadian CMS-330. The step would facilitate vertical integration between all desired weapons and sensors, as previously reported in German defense media.

Apart from the matter of choosing a specific radar and CMS combination, the vessels will have 64 cells for the Mk 41 VLS, in two groups of 32 cells. For Germany, the use of SM-2- and SM-6 missiles is foreseen.

Quadpacked ESSM provides medium-range SAM capability. The cells will be able to launch both Tomahawk LACM missiles and SM-3 anti-ballistic missiles. Two conventional RIM-116 RAM 21 launchers and eight NSM anti-ship missile launchers will complete the missile armament.

The vessels will carry a Leonardo OTO 127/64 LW main gun and several small caliber automatic cannons. The German MLG-27 systems, which previously met this requirement, will likely be replaced by a new system capable of providing enhanced defense against drone attacks.

Two laser guns mounted forward of the bridge and in the hangar are the last notable aspect of armament on the MEKO A-400 AMD. The overall design is similar to Rheinmetall’s 20 kW fiber laser based on a beam combiner. Considering the ongoing development, such a weapon is unlikely to be part of an initial configuration.

The propulsion system will consist of two gas turbines combined with two diesel engines. The layout allows a top speed of 32 knots. The MEKO A-400 AMD will have a range of 4,000 nautical miles with an endurance of 30 days. The design includes additional hangar space for two NH-90 sized helicopters. Space for two ISO containers next to the anti-ship missile launchers allows for additional mission flexibility.

The German Navy has a requirement for up to six new AAW frigates. The ships will replace the three Sachsen when they reach the end of their lives from the mid-2030s. Recent reports suggest that Berlin may reduce the final number to five.

Germany’s Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems (TKMS) at Euronaval 2024 in Paris presented a model of the anti-aircraft warfare frigate MEKO A-400 AMD.
