The French Navy will proceed to sign the contract for the construction of the new PANG (Porte-Avions Nouvelle G\u00e9n\u00e9ration) aircraft carrier in 2025. The new aircraft carrier will be nuclear-powered, will replace the current “Charles de Gaulle” and is expected to cost around \u20ac10 billion at least. According to the current planning, construction of PANG will begin in 2026 and be completed in 2038. Initial studies for the new aircraft carrier began in October 2018. PANG will incorporate an electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS : Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System), the its length will be about 310 meters, its width about 85 meters and it will reach a maximum speed of about 27 knots (50 kilometers per hour). The new aircraft carrier will have a displacement of around 75,000 tons and will be able to carry out 60 aircraft takeoffs per day. It should also have ammunition storage areas for intensive seven-day operations. In its standard configuration, the new aircraft carrier should carry, in addition to the 40 Rafale-M fighter jets, 5-6 NH-90 helicopters, two E-2D HawkEye early warning and control aircraft and UAV\/UCAV in the role of intelligence gathering, attack and aerial refueling.
