Travel trends are changing and determined by social conditions, now also by technology which, all indications are, will completely change the way we travel much sooner than we possibly ever imagined.

Nevertheless, the always high attendance at Europe’s major and minor museums shows that people have a permanent need to seek out culture and art on their travels and – why not? – to anoint their love for art as a basic reason to travel. On the other hand, some of the world’s most famous and iconic sights and works of art, in the age of social media, can become the occasion for that coveted Instagram and Tik Tok post, however shallow or trivial it may seem. , at the end of the day, it ends up being a vehicle for making some of humanity’s greatest masterpieces accessible to more and more people.

Because it is absolutely true that Art – painting, sculpture, music, architecture, cinema, literature, theater – is in a thousand and two ways, a thing absolutely and incomparably “photogenic” that always finds its own way to enthrall and captivate us whether we can grasp its deepest essence or not so much.

On the other hand, there are always the sworn Art lovers. For them there is no travel route without art (probably the other way around). They are the ones who plan their summers and Christmas holidays based on some important, for them, cultural event or based on the cheapest tickets to a theater or an opera in Europe.

Whichever category you belong to, European Art is waiting for you. And the good news is that she remains so communicative and open that everyone always finds something charming in her.

London-Great Britain (UK)

The British capital rightly holds a place on the list of European destinations that art lovers visit again and again for a host of obvious, expected and, at the same time, charming reasons.

Something that many people often don’t know about London is that it is, among other things, a vibrant, ever-evolving student campus that is buzzing with energy and the vibe of a huge portion of very young people, which is regularly rotated and fed back. In general, a capital like London is impossible to ever stand still, endlessly absorbing all the new tendencies and trends and channeling them from, there and beyond, to hundreds of art spaces, to thousands of artistic workshops workshops, countless theaters and concert venues and even more dining areas with an artsy character. An important role in all this is played by the fact that the capital of Great Britain is the “home” of some of the leading academic art schools in the entire planet: from Central Saint Martins, Fine Arts College to the University of the Arts and Royal Academy of London, in this wonderful city people arrive every September from all over Britain, but also from the rest of the world, with their only dream of becoming the first of the first in Fine Arts, acting, dance. And that in itself says a lot about the unexplored, artistic pulse of London.

Of course, a tour here cannot begin without the city’s dozens of art museums, with the Tate Gallery, on the south bank of the Thames, Tate Modern, London’s National Gallery and Somerset House forming an unrivaled collection of great works from past centuries to the present day. It’s worth a stop, though, at the National Portrait Gallery in Trafalgar Square, where you’ll have the chance to see some excellent, periodical exhibitions of photography – after all, the National Portrait Gallery has hosted some terrific collections from its ever-so-attractive universe pop and rock culture, leaving history in London’s cultural events.

Also, visit the sprawling but oh-so-interesting British Museum to become deeply aware of the thousands of ways in which art, from the beginnings of human civilization to the 18th century, derives from history and current social structures and is not never, never a question independent and unaffected by the social context in which it was born. The Victoria & Albert Museum is also of great interest, especially for those who declare themselves to be lovers of design and rare objects that contain their own great past.

And, of course, no discussion about the artistic face of London can be considered complete without a mention of the theater that in the British capital knows well how to masterfully balance between the sold out musicals of the giant halls and the much-discussed productions of great theatrical texts, such as those of Edward Alby and Caryl Churchill. London, after all, is a place with a huge theatrical tradition, for many it is the place where the top dramatic works from the time of ancient Greece onwards are “born” and so it is well worth a visit to the historic Shakespeare’s Globe, the place where he worked and William Shakespeare performed many of his plays. Now the theater is in full operation and you can watch shows here exactly as they were performed back in the days of Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe.

If you travel to London in summer and love music, then don’t miss the opportunity to attend a concert in one of the green parks of the British capital. The protagonist, of course, is the huge Hyde Park, where musical events have been held for decades, some of them, in fact, have left history in the universe of rock culture.

Florence-Italy (EU)

Even more than “Eternal” Rome, Florence is, for many, the Italian capital of Fine Arts, since the ideas, principles and rules of the entire Renaissance art were founded there. Today, the historic center of Florence is still a Renaissance universe that hides indescribable beauty. In fact, anyone who has been to the city of the Italian north at least once can confirm that upon entering Florence, the visitor has the feeling of entering an immense museum.

It is not just a coincidence that even in psychology there is a term that is related to the specific destination and the feeling that its beauty causes in travelers. This is the famous Stendhal Syndrome which is, in essence, an intense, indefinable feeling of awe and panic, excitement and terror that has been experienced by many first-time visitors to the city. It seems that said syndrome is a real thing, as in 2018 the 64-year-old Italian Carlo Olmastroni suffered a heart attack in front of Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, one of the greatest and most beautiful paintings in the history of world painting and a milestone for the Renaissance .

Botticelli’s work is housed in one of the most important museum institutions in the world, the famous Uffizi Gallery which is, without a doubt, the most famous attraction in Florence. Giotto, Piero della Francesca, Filippo Lippi, Botticelli, Leonardo, Raffello, Michelangelo and Caravaggio astonish visitors and if you are in Florence for the first time it is really worth bypassing the temporary museum exhibitions in order to devote all your time to permanent collection, which is truly something magical.

You will also visit the Palazzo Vecchio with its beautiful inner courtyard full of amazing frescoes, fountains and marble sculptures from the 16th century, but also the Galleria dell’ Accademia, the second most visited museum in Florence, because of the wonderful David, the famous sculpture of Michelangelo , which has been here since 1873. Here, you will have the opportunity to see another large collection of Renaissance paintings that were created in the Italian city from 1300 to 1600 and which, although they do not “carry” the glamor of the exhibits that you will see in the Uffizi Gallery, they deserve your attention and interest. The only thing that is certain is that you will have all the time and peace to enjoy them, since, in fact, almost all the visitors who arrive here every year long to see David, with the result that the spot in front of the beautiful Renaissance statue is inseparable .

And because fashion is art, don’t miss the opportunity to make a stop at the Gucci museum, which opened in 2011, on the 90th anniversary of the famous fashion house, and through its impressive exhibits lists the entire labyrinthine evolution of the great Italian brand from its beginnings to absolute dominance in the world fashion universe. Inside a magnificent building, which dates back to 1359 but was reconstructed in 1905, you will visit an elegant boutique of the house, several rooms full of exhibits and a much-discussed café-restaurant curated by one of the world’s leading chefs, the award-winning with three Michelin stars Massimo Bottura, the man behind the famous Osteria Francescana in the small Italian town of Modena.

Amsterdam-Holland (EU)

The heart of modern art beats loudly in Amsterdam, a city that should be considered primarily the home of parties, electronic music and contemporary Fine Art far more than it is considered the home of tulips and countless wet canals.

The Dutch capital is quite simply a city that seems to have developed around the idea of modern culture, a city that is alternative and sought-after from any angle you look at it, a destination that enables permanent residents as well as visitors , to move everywhere by bicycle and attend endless cultural events in galleries, museums, cinemas, theaters and concert halls.

What is important to bear in mind when trying to understand the reasons why the capital of the Netherlands is a non-negotiable cultural destination is the fact that for Amsterdam art is not a modern affair, but a vast history of centuries. In fact, it has significantly influenced the formation of artistic movements in Europe and the rest of the world from the 15th century until today. Of course, big names now such as the experimental artist Saskia de Brau, the influential visual artist Rob Scholte and the photographer Inez Van Lamsweerde have, at the moment, their own share of the pie of the Dutch and international cultural scenes, however, no matter how many years if they pass Amsterdam it will always be the home of Vincent van Gogh, the painter who became the cornerstone of European Expressionism and a stop at the museum dedicated to him is essential to get in touch with the depth of his great work.

The permanent collection housed in the Van Gogh Museum exceeds 700 works from the entire artistic career of the Dutch artist, among them original copies of world-renowned masterpieces such as The Bedroom, Sunflowers and Almond Blossoms. An important detail for Van Gogh’s work is the element of reproduction of some works in second or even third copies. However, many of the originals are in the Amsterdam museum, awe-inspiring viewers with their intelligent beauty.

Before Van Gogh, however, another group of influential artists played their part in shaping trends in the visual arts of another era. From Vermeer to Rembrandt, Flemish painting spreads its indescribable charm to visitors at the famous Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam through 8,000 works created in a total of 8 centuries of Dutch art. Among what you will see is Van Gogh’s “Self-Portrait”, as well as Rembrandt’s “Jewish Bride”.

If you are a lover of modern art then make a stop at the Stedelijk Museum, which houses more than 2,500 examples of modern visual arts, both from the Netherlands and from the rest of the world. Or at FOAM, where the art of photography is at its peak in a wonderful, minimalist space with amazing design.

Finally, Amsterdam hosts some of the most famous music festivals in the entire world. Every autumn, specifically in October, the Amsterdam Dance Event, the largest dance music festival in the world, is organized in the Dutch capital, while the Awakenings festival, organized every March, May and June, is considered a real institution for techno music lovers. Also, in the summers crowds of locals and visitors flock to the Dutch capital’s Gaasperpark for the famous Amsterdam Open Air festival which hosts big names from the house, dubster, techno and hip hop music scene.

Paris-France (EU)

If all the places that once “gave birth” to great Art are, indiscriminately, equal to each other, then Paris is more equal than all the rest. Because in a Europe darkened by the First World War, looking in terror for new steps and a new way to hope and exist, almost all the talented, influential minds of world painting, literature, poetry and philosophy chose this great city to live and find themselves in a constant, involuntary conversation with each other. A conversation that for the reality of the 1920s looked like an endless party, but in the end gave us the whole of modern art, where it was to change the world forever.

What exactly is happening with Paris is difficult to fully understand “from a distance”, through descriptions and narratives, but the small “miracle” of the French capital is that its essence is automatically understood from the first moment one walks on its streets. Certainly, it is home to some of the greatest museums on the planet, housing priceless treasures from throughout human history. You’ll start at the Louvre, where hordes of visitors raise their cameras in front of the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo and the Victory of Samothrace. And if there was only one destination in the world that can be proud to have turned its great art into an Instagram trend then it would be, without a second thought, Paris. But don’t just stick to the famous and over-the-top. The world’s largest museum, which was once a palace, houses some of the most fascinating works of art you will ever see. And no matter how many times one comes here, it is never enough.

At the Musée d’Orsay you will visit the great Impressionists and at the Musée Rodin you will see the greatest sculptures of an artist who irrevocably marked the path of world sculpture. In the City of Light, also give the smaller museums a chance, such as the Musée d’Orangerie, the Picasso Museum in the Marais or Victor Hugo’s house near the Place des Vosges. But also in the ultimate temple of modern art, the amazing Pompidou Center, a breath away from the Rambuteau metro station, which is, apart from everything else, an admirable architectural achievement.

The small bookshops of the French capital, hidden in tangled Parisian alleys, are also truly special, but, of course, the most emblematic remains without a doubt the historic Shakespeare & Co, in the Quartier Latin area, which is, perhaps, the most famous and talked about bookstore worldwide. But even this cannot easily compete with the charm of a walk along the banks of the Seine, browsing the second-hand French books and engravings of the bouquinistes, who for centuries have set up their stalls against the backdrop of the magnificent river.

And if you love opera, ballet and classical music, then book tickets as early as you can for a performance at the Opera Garnier, one of the most beautiful and impressive opera houses on the planet. In a capital where art is not the point, but the daily fact and the frenzy of visitors for a photo in front of the great artistic masterpieces is something that cannot be described in words, you will fully realize the countless reasons that can and should one travels for the sake of art.

Berlin-Germany (EU)

Two cities in one, Berlin is that point in Europe where the modern Western world “falls” smoothly onto the footprints left behind by the totalitarian regime of the German Democratic Republic.
