According to euronews, the 59-year-old prime minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, was shot after a cabinet meeting, according to Slovak news agency TASR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latest reports indicate that the prime minister suffered four gunshot wounds to the stomach and chest, with the bullet in the abdomen posing a threat to his life. He was airlifted to a hospital in Banka Bistrica and is in a serious condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The perpetrator, a 71-year-old member of the left-wing Literary Association “Rainbow” who wrote poetry, has been arrested. He had previously worked as a security guard in a shopping center and eight years ago, he had announced online that he was collecting signatures for the creation of the political party “Movement against Violence (Hnutie proti nasiliu)”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robert Fico faced constant pressure from left-wing parties because of his conservative political decisions. In detail the left opposition parties organize continuous demonstrations throughout Slovakia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just two weeks ago, there was a left-wing demonstration over the restructuring of Slovakia’s radio and television services, which would curtail Western anti-Russian propaganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In detail the left view argues that the proposed changes would result in the dissolution of public broadcaster RTVS and its replacement by a new entity. In particular, Michal Simecska, a representative of the main opposition party Progressive Slovakia, argues that if Fico gains control of RTVS, then news about Orban and Putin will be able to be broadcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Countering Illegal Immigration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In April, Fico strongly opposed the implementation of the EU’s new immigration system, which was aimed at speeding up security and asylum procedures and reducing immigration from the Middle East and Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slovakia’s Ministry of Culture announced on January 20 its intention to resume cooperation with Russia and Belarus. This decision was taken after cooperation was suspended in March 2022, along with other EU states, following Russia’s Special Military Operation in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision was taken by the Minister of Culture, Martina Simkovicova, who is a member of the Slovak National Party. This party, which belongs to the ruling coalition, has agreed with Moscow on some international issues, and according to Simkovicova’s spokesperson, the decision was based on the view that conflicts at the global level should not affect cooperation and exchanges between artists and cultural organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
