He played a crucial role in the transition from the 19<sup>th<\/sup>\ncentury avant-garde to the emergent modernist movements of the early 20<sup>th<\/sup>\ncentury. He was an inspiration for Dada and Surrealism and a touchstone for the\nTheatre of the Absurd.
