It is equipped with sophisticated digital systems that allow the 4++ generation fighter with 5th elements to effectively interact with other combat aircraft when solving various combat missions.

The Russian Aerospace Forces have received a new batch of Sukhoi Su-35S fighter jets after the fighters completed ground and flight tests at an aircraft factory in the Far East. The Su-35S is an advanced multi-role and hyper-maneuver fighter designed and equipped to destroy both enemy aircraft and ground forces.

Generation 4+ usually means upgraded armament, avionics and radar while 4++ indicates the integration of weapons and systems that would be found on a 5th generation aircraft. Developed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau, the single-seater Su-35S is a modernization of the T-10 – the basis on which the 4th generation all-weather supersonic heavy multi-role fighter was built. The Su-35S made its maiden flight in 2008 and was introduced into the Russian military in 2014.

Hits 30 targets at once

It has a radar with a range of over 400 kilometers and a maximum yaw angle of up to 120 degrees, electronic warfare equipment. It also has two additional fuel tanks that increase the aircraft’s maximum range from 3,600 kilometers to 4,500.

The aircraft, which has a top speed of up to 2,500 kilometers per hour, has an onboard computer that allows the fighter to detect and target up to four ground or 30 air targets and engage between two and eight targets simultaneously, depending on the missile which is used. The aircraft can carry a wide range of short-, medium- and long-range air-to-air missiles.

It can also be equipped with air-to-surface and anti-ship missiles as well as precision bombs – both guided and unguided – allowing the Su-35S to attack naval and ground targets.

The aircraft outperforms its Western counterparts such as the Eurofighter Typhoon and the US-built F-16C Block 50/52 in terms of maximum speed at altitude (M2.25 vs. M2 in both cases).

The American magazine National Interest described the Su-35S as a “really fast and dangerous fighter”. According to the same source, the aircraft “proved to be a very capable opponent of current US aircraft, including the F-15 Eagle, F/A-18 Super Hornet, and even the F-35 Lightning II.”

Record production

The CEO of the state-owned United Aircraft Corporation, Yury Slyusar, said about the work that has been done to continue deliveries of the Su35S: “The plant in Komsomolsk-on-Amur reached an impressive production rate this year. It is the second batch of combat aircraft delivered to the Aerospace Forces. The plant fulfills commitments for deliveries of new aircraft and is working on the creation of new batches of serial Su-35 and Su-57 aircraft.”

The Komsomolsk-on-Amur plant has significantly increased production of both Su-57 and Su-35 fighters. Twelve aircraft of the first type were delivered in 2023, up from just six the previous year, with that number rising to 20 in 2024, allowing the Air Force to form its first full regiment. It is expected that as the Su-57 continues to expand, the Su-35 will be phased out of production over the next five years.

The vast majority of fighters produced at the facility in the ten years since the breakup of the Soviet Union were exported mainly to China, due to the economic decay in Russia itself in the 1990s and the sharp shrinking of the fighter fleet to a fraction of its Soviet-era size .

Production from the mid-2000s then focused on exports of the Su-30MK2, the development of which had been funded by Chinese orders, to other customers including Vietnam, Uganda, Venezuela and Indonesia.

Su-35s have played a leading role in air-to-air operations in the Russian-Ukrainian War since February 2022 and have recorded significant successes. One of its most notable successes occurred in the early days of the war, on March 5, 2022, when it shot down four of the Ukrainian Air Force’s Su-27s near the city of Zhytomir.

The Su-35S is the best the Russian Aerospace Forces have to offer.
