A Russian military intelligence unit GRU is behind attacks across Europe, using a new method against scores of American diplomats and spies around the world, according to a new investigation by The Insider, 60 Minutes and Der Spiegel, which sheds light on unexplained health events known as “Havana Syndrome”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The name Havana syndrome dates back to 2016, when US diplomats in the Cuban capital reported falling ill after hearing piercing sounds at night, sparking speculation of an attack by an unspecified sonar weapon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To date, more than 100 reports of this disease, (officially referred to as abnormal health incidents), have since surfaced among US spies, diplomats, military officers and advisers in China, Europe and Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new joint investigation, which draws on intercepted Russian intelligence documents, travel records, call metadata and eyewitness accounts, suggests that Russia’s Special Unit 29155 is behind the mysterious attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Russia’s Unit 29155, a special unit that undertakes assassination and sabotage missions for the Russian military intelligence agency GRU, has been linked in previous years to a number of destabilizing actions in the Czech Republic, Moldova, Bulgaria, Montenegro and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Senior members of the unit had received awards and promotions to political positions for developing “non-lethal acoustic weapons,” according to the investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
