The latest public opinion polls show that Biden will lose to former President Donald Trump in the general election.

In the latest CNBC poll (Trump wipes out Biden’s lead with Latino voters in 2024: CNBC survey), Biden trails Trump by six points. That should galvanize Democrats, especially given that Biden led Trump by about 10 points in December 2019, 11 months before he narrowly won the 2020 election. There are striking similarities between Biden and former President Jimmy Carter, the latter A Democratic president who lost his re-election. Biden’s approval rating (39%) is nearly identical to Carter’s (37%) in December 1979.

Moreover, Biden’s approval rating — like Carter’s — has been determined by economic pessimism, the migrant crisis and unrest abroad: the withdrawal from Afghanistan, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and now Israel’s war with Hamas .

Biden trails Trump on these important issues—by 21 points on the economy, 23 points on border security and 11 points on the Israel-Hamas war, according to a recent Marquette University poll.

In particular, Biden is losing ground with the core of the Democratic base—young, liberal and non-white voters—in a way reminiscent of the challenges Carter faced during his re-election campaign.

Biden’s administration mistakes

Opposition to Biden’s delivery of the Israel-Hamas conflict was a major point on which he lost points. Three-quarters of voters aged 18-29 disapprove of how Biden has handled the conflict, according to the most recent New York Times/Siena College poll.

It’s important to note that Biden still faces a number of personal issues that even Carter didn’t. The legal troubles facing the president and his son continue to cast a pall, and House Republicans are heading toward an impeachment inquiry. But arguably the most significant personal challenge facing Biden is his age.

At age 81, Americans have serious doubts about his abilities, and three-quarters (74%) say he is too old to serve a second term, an ABC News-Washington Post poll reported. Many Democrats have privately — or in some cases, publicly — expressed anxiety that Biden’s age and perceived lack of viability could cost the party the White House.

Behind the scenes, prominent Biden-Harris donors and allies are reportedly expressing similar concerns. This wariness about Biden’s re-election prospects is not new among Democrats. Indeed, dozens of party officials and members of Congress have expressed doubts about the president’s ability to run in the summer of 2022, according to a New York Times report.

The case of Kamala Harris

Vice President Kamala Harris remains the most obvious choice, at least logistically and legally, and Biden’s prominent African-American supporters — led by South Carolina Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn — would certainly push for her nomination. But Harris is problematic.

Despite White House efforts to improve her public standing, she continues to be behind the president. An NBC News poll taken in November found Harris with a dismal 29 percent approval rating, compared to Biden’s 36 percent.

Worse, he trails Trump in a hypothetical general election matchup by 12 points (52% to 40%). Given her deep unpopularity, having Harris anointed would not only cost Democrats the White House, but could also jeopardize candidates for Senate control.

Sure, there would be a bunch of legal hurdles for Democrats to overcome if they opened the nominating process on that date, but the prospect of a broad-based defeat will almost certainly lead the party to do whatever it can to find another nominated by the acting vice president.

The case of Michelle Obama

Without a doubt, many believe that the strongest—if least likely—potential candidate is former First Lady Michelle Obama, who left office with a 72 percent approval rating and universal popularity among African-Americans and Democrats.

Not only does Michelle Obama handily defeat Biden in a hypothetical two-way Democratic primary (48% to 36%), but she also leads Trump in a general election matchup (46% to 45%), according to a poll by The Center Square.

Michelle Obama’s influence, popularity and ability to inspire the core of the Democratic Party would make her a force to be reckoned with, although her chances of seeking office remain slim.

Reinstating Hillary Clinton and the case of Gavin Newsom

The formidable former senator and secretary of state has a powerful political machine, has voiced her support for Israel, isn’t afraid to attack Trump, and has supported more moderate policies than most Democrats.

Polls suggest he could struggle in the primary, not to mention he suffered a heartbreaking loss in 2016 to the Republican he likely would have faced.

There is one Democrat who has emerged as both the most likely and most viable candidate in recent months: California’s Democratic governor Gavin Newsom. Taking on Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in a debate moderated by Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Newsom accomplished in an hour what no Democrat has ever managed: to present a full-throated defense of Democratic policies in an otherwise political unfavorable environment, while at the same time following the center line when necessary.

Newsom was particularly effective on the economy.
Sitting across from the governor of a state with no income tax, Newsom unabashedly defended his state’s controversial progressive tax system.

He also articulated Biden’s central position on the economy in a way the president failed to do, emphasizing that slowing inflation and a strong labor market are the result of Democratic policies.

Newsom has pushed back on controversial Republican social policies – namely abortion, book bans and guns – while toeing the middle line on issues that have plagued Democrats, namely parental involvement in schools.

In another keynote discussion, Newsom acknowledged the need for tighter border control policies, also making it clear that Republicans are trying to “play politics” by withholding Biden’s $14 billion request for border funding.

On foreign policy, Newsom has been portrayed as significantly tougher than both Biden and Harris, particularly on the Israel-Hamas war.

Biden has been criticized for appearing to soften his support for Israel, while Harris more forcefully urged Israel to exercise restraint this weekend. While national polls for Newsom are thin, the data that exists suggests he would be a strong contender.

A Fox News poll conducted before the debate shows him trailing Trump by just four points, the same margin as Biden, which is within the margin of error.

That Newsom is doing so well in the polls despite the fact that he just entered the national arena and has never been president or vice president is telling. Of course, it would be premature to rule out the possibility of Biden seeking a second term.

But if the president makes the decision to drop out of the race à la Lyndon Johnson in 1968, rather than suffer the fate of Jimmy Carter in 1980, two old faces and one new face will rise to the top of the list of possible candidates.

It is becoming increasingly clear that President Joe Biden should not be the Democratic nominee for president in 2024.
