The new engine, the AL-51F-1 turbofan, places the Su-57 firmly in the class of 5th generation aircraft. Russian officials insist that even with the previous engine, the Su-57 was more than capable and met all performance criteria.

Enhanced with AI

The Su-57 was used in the ongoing war in Ukraine to destroy Ukrainian radars while some batches of the fleet were also enhanced with artificial intelligence (AI), which enabled pilot contact, communications and aircraft systems management technologies.

The announcement of the new engine marks another step in the stable operation of the aircraft. All Su-57s transferred to the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) in 2024 will receive Stage 2 engines.

This engine will be installed in the next batch of Su-57s delivered to the Russian Air Force in 2024. Ten Su-57s received from the Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aircraft Plant in 2023 were also boosted with a Stage 2 Izdeliye engine. In other words, the Stage 2/Izdeliye 30/AL-51F-1 will be the permanent feature on any Su-57 delivered to the Russian Air Force from now on.

The new engine will not be fitted to older Su 57s for operational reasons

However, this does not mean that the Su-57s already in service will be retrofitted with the new engines. Russian air force planners and defense industry officials perceive the effort as extremely tedious and expensive. Even if pre-2023 Su-57 aircraft were flexible and compatible enough to assimilate the newer engines with little to no changes.

A Russian official cited technical, tactical and operational reasons why the youths were not present. The primary reason, however, is that such an effort is unnecessary.

The Russians have long anticipated a future war with the US and NATO

Any absence of Su-57 units from the existing fleet will seriously upset its operational calculations. Because Russia cannot afford to reduce Su-57 numbers. The Russian Air Force is expected to have 76 Su-57 fighters by 2027.

This is stated in the State Equipment Program and the contract signed between the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) and the Russian Ministry during the 2019 iteration of the Armiya 2019 exhibition.

Based on Russian media reports from 2018 to now, the number of Su-57s in operational action can be assumed to be at least 20. However, following standard practices in the air force, not all of them will be operationally available all the time.

Some will be used to train new pilots, develop new technologies and practice operational procedures and tactics. For example, it was used operationally in a Suppression of Enemy Air Defense/Destroy Enemy Air Defense (SEAD/DEAD) mission in June 2022. Four Su-57s were “connected and integrated into a single information network through automatic communication, data transmission, navigation and reconnaissance systems in real time”.

Aircraft are still being tested primarily to develop a full range of tactics, operational concepts and standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Single force

An important part of the strategy is the integration of the Su-57 with the S-70 Okhotnik unmanned aerial vehicle and other fighters such as the Su-35, Su-30SM and A-50U AWACS, into a single air force.

Finally the Su-57s await the arrival of the 300 km range air-to-air missile (AAM), which appears to be the RVV-BD/R-37M. Training and testing needs would tie up a significant number of the current Su-57 fleet, and an engine retrofit project would further reduce that number.

This would reduce the deterrent value of the Russian air force on NATO air forces, particularly when the F-16s are expected to arrive in 2024. Thus, the Russian decision was to install the new engines in the 2023 and post-2023 batch.

Moreover, even with the current AL-41F-1S turbofan, “the Su-57 surpasses the American F-35 in its characteristics,” the Russians added.

The new Su 57 is silent

The Stage 2 engine features a serrated exhaust nozzle, called a chevron, which improves thrust, stability, maneuverability and performance while reducing engine noise.

It also goes a long way in reducing the infrared (IR) trails and radar of the aircraft. By changing the temperature distribution and shape of the exhaust plume, the serrated nozzles can make the fighter more difficult to detect for air-to-air missiles with an infrared detector in the terminal guidance mode.

Infrared seekers are extremely effective during heavy electronic warfare (EW) scenarios, especially in combat between conventional air forces. The new engine will allow the Su-57 to reach speeds between Mach 1.5 and Mach 1.6

All future Su-57 fighters delivered to the Russian Air Force by United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) will be powered by the advanced and more powerful…

[1808
2937,58,5055
post-16834","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-defense-space","tag-defence","tag-russia","tag-su-57
["GET
