{"id":1679,"date":"2019-12-19T16:14:34","date_gmt":"2019-12-19T14:14:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.liberalglobe.com\/?p=1679"},"modified":"2019-12-19T16:14:37","modified_gmt":"2019-12-19T14:14:37","slug":"the-correlation-between-turkeys-energy-and-geopolitical-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.liberalglobe.com\/?p=1679","title":{"rendered":"The Correlation between Turkey&#8217;s Energy and Geopolitical Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent illegal Turkish hydrocarbon research in the Eastern Mediterranean\nSea and specifically in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Republic of\nCyprus (EU) and the illegal establishment of an EEZ between Turkey and Libya\nthat violates grossly International Law, causing friction with the neighboring\ncountries of Turkey, while emitting Turkey as an international factor of\ndestabilisation, apart from their geopolitical dimension, reflect the huge\neconomic and energy needs to satisfy the internal demand of this country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According&nbsp;&nbsp; to the International&nbsp; Energy&nbsp; Agency&nbsp; (IEA) report May&nbsp; 2019 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iea.org\">www.iea.org<\/a>), the total primary energy supply in Turkey is analyzed to\n31% oil, 28.1% coal, 28.1% natural gas, 4.2% hydro, 6.3% geothermal, wind and\nsolar energy and 2.3% biofuels and waste (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iea.org\/data-and-statistics\">www.iea.org\/data-and-statistics<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">by<strong> Thanos S. Existing facilities in Turkey have the potential to generate electricity through the combustion of carbon total efficiency of 18.5 GW. The coal production Is projected to grow further by 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liberalglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Af\u015fin-Elbistan_A_termik_santrali.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1682\" width=\"382\" height=\"286\"\/><figcaption><strong>Afsin-Elbistan<\/strong> <strong>A Power Station Turkey<\/strong><br>Photo by Javabite, licensed <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Public_Domain\">Public Domain<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2.<\/strong> <em>Energy from hydroelectricity<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hydro-electric installations in total (public and private) in Turkey yield electricity of 19.7% compared to the total energy produced in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3.<\/strong> <em>Energy from geothermal<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkey in 2018 ranked first in the world at the rate of growth in terms of its new geothermal capacity by increasing its available power by 21% or from 219 MW to 1.3 GW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4.<\/strong> <em>Shale oil and gas energy<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In October 2019, the production of shale gas began in Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5.<\/strong> <em>Renewable Energy Sources<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkey has launched the construction of 5 solar parks, a hydro-electric\nplant and the production of electric public transport. The funding of these\nprojects will be done through the EU assistance programs to Turkey with a view\nto the energy and economic convergence of its economy with the EU (IPA II).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkey intends to increase its productivity from RES to 64 GW in 2025. In addition, a wind farm will be created with wind turbines outside the city of Izmir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>6.<\/strong> <em>Thermal waste treatment<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Turkey co-incinerate to date 1 million tons of waste for energy production, while transformed (2018) 138000 tons of waste into production of 37000 tons of compost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>7.<\/strong> <em>Nuclear energy<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Akkuyu nuclear power plant is manufactured by the Russian company Rosatom and will comprise four units of 1200 MW.&nbsp; The first phase involves the construction of two units. The total cost of the investment is around $20 billion, while Turkey has given permission to the same Russian company to construct a second nuclear plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>8.<\/strong> <em>Battery power and storage<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Japanese companies Toyota and Panasonic have been licensed to produce electric vehicle batteries in Turkey. While the Turkish company Zorlu Enerji has announced the construction of a 25 GW storage battery production unit in collaboration with a Chinese company.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>9.<\/strong> <em>Rare Earths<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company AMR Mineral Metal Inc. has focused on extracting, processing and promoting deposits of rare earth and metals in Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liberalglobe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Karakaya_dam-GAP.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1683\" width=\"399\" height=\"331\"\/><figcaption><strong>Kara kaya Dam<\/strong><br>Photo by US Department of Agriculture, licensed <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Public_Domain\">Public Domain<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Energy Development Road<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is seen with Turkey&#8217;s above energy data is the fact that Turkey is\ntrying to exploit and expand on all the energy sources and capabilities it can\nhave available which energy sources are diverse and complementary between them.\nEssentially it is indicated a road of real energy growth followed by&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Turkey and not a status of energy losses\nmanagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The achievement of this energy development road is achieved and will continue to be achieved in the future by Turkey with three different methods:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1.<\/strong> It does not burden its industries with CO2 emission charges and other restrictive policies imposed the EU on EU territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2.<\/strong> At the same time Turkey gains from carbon leakage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3.<\/strong> Turkey is using the funds offered by European Investment Bank (EIB) and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to the best extent.
