We always refer to countries whose students scored lower than the national average in all three subjects.

What should an education system offer?

Those who acquire basic education, Primary and Secondary, to know letters, that is, to know basic spelling and syntax, to be able to understand what a text says and to be able to describe something, an object, an event or a concept. They also know basic arithmetic, i.e. the four operations, and possess the level of thinking required to solve a simple arithmetic problem with an unknown factor. In addition, they must be elementary proficient in geometry, physics, geography, history, painting, sports, all at the Primary school level.

The entire population that finishes Primary and High School must know these things, and if they know them, then the education system is successful. The education systems of the countries whose students were evaluated below the average in the PISA tests, show the above mentioned not to offer them.

Too many people in these countries communicate through messages written in a language that mixes English with their mother tongue. That is, words written in English with words in their native language. Why; Because they don’t know how to spell in their mother tongue and are afraid of being embarrassed.

Too many people cannot do simple mathematical operations or calculate prices and discounts in their daily life, because they do not know how to solve simple arithmetic problems.

The children’s parents themselves may not remember what they were taught in primary school and too many cannot help their children with reading, not even in primary school. There is no need to talk about Middle School and High School, things get worse there. Children are forced to work hard with teachers and professors throughout school if they want to get a good grade or go on to university. Misspellings, poor syntax, wrong word usage, wrong verb tenses, inability to understand texts and concepts are the norm among adults in these countries.

You learn the language in primary school, as well as basic arithmetic. The results for the students of the aforementioned countries show that their education systems do not teach the children the language of their country and basic arithmetic.

The knowledge that Primary School should offer and does not offer is sufficient for the needs of everyday life. Middle School and High School offer additional knowledge for anyone who needs it. The Primary school, unfortunately, does not offer the students and consequently the future citizens of these countries the necessary knowledge for their daily life.

In high school, things are even worse. The material is expanded, the lessons are more difficult, but unfortunately they are completely indifferent to the students. And they are indifferent because, usually, they have no relation to the current reality, the teaching material remains roughly the same as it was many decades ago, the teaching method is outdated, the books are very poorly written.

Critical thinking is not a pursuit of the educational systems of these countries

The demand from the schools of these countries seems to be the parrot method, this is examined and this is rewarded. However, everything that children learn with the parrot method is forgotten. Critical thinking is not a pursuit of the specific educational systems of these countries. The imagination, which all children possess, seems to disappear in school. The needs, opinions and concerns of the students do not concern the school, since the purpose of the specific educational systems is to make the teachers and professors feel satisfied and whether the students will learn is up to them. The international evaluations simply confirm what everyone finds out every day in these countries, that the level of their Education is low.

Many may argue that these countries from time to time present some brilliant students and brilliant students who win in international competitions. This is certainly true, but they excel because they themselves try hard and because they themselves have set themselves the goal of excellence. They are not led there by the education system of their countries, they get there on their own and some may have been lucky enough to be taught by a competent, imaginative and respectful teacher or professor, which is extremely rare in the specific education systems of these countries – as are the firsts of their pupils and students respectively.

Unfortunately, these countries do not want to perceive the reality, because they want to believe that they have great educational systems and of course they do not think to change them for the better. This is how they limit the debate about changes in Education to the issue of universities.

The most important reform that could be done would be to change the subject matter and the teaching method at school, primarily at the Primary level, which forms the basis of the education of the vast majority of the population and in fact offers all the knowledge they use in their daily lives as adult citizens, the children. If elementary school changes and if critical thinking is allowed in high school, then everything else will change as well.

Countries whose students did not do well at all in the international PISA tests, which assess the level of students from 80 OECD countries…

[990,991
5010,5009,1237,5008
post-16631","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-columns","category-feuilleton","tag-education","tag-educational-systems","tag-oecd","tag-pisa-tests
["GET
