Lately, in the context of public debates about Turkish armaments, as a result of the “difficulties” in Turkey’s relations with the United States, the issue of the S-400 (C-400 in Russian) has come up again, as Erdogan’s key mistake that led to the exclusion of his country from Western weapon systems, such as the F-35 (dropped from the program altogether), the F-16s that form the backbone of its Air Force (THK), and others. However, it is often repeated that \u201cthe S-400s are in their boxes\u201d, a claim that is not supported by evidence, ending up cultivating a convenient myth\u2026 for the Erdogan regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So let’s look at the matter a little more systematically. The capital of Turkey, Ankara, has two military airports. Ankara\/Murted (LTAE) and Ankara\/Etimesgut (LTAD). The first was home to 4 Ana Jet Ussu (Main Jet Base), which before the coup was known as Akinci. The (FILO) 141st (Intercept), 142st (Bombardment) and 143st (Retraining Squadron) squadrons were based at the base. These war squadrons, after the – somewhat surreal – coup that took place in mid-July 2016, were disbanded. Personnel and aircraft were transferred to other combat wings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This happened because the specific Divisions played an active role in the coup (they bombed various places in Ankara, including the presidential palace). The S-400 system, according to all open sources, was developed in Ankara, in order to protect\u2026 the capital. That is, the Erdogan regime. Let’s also recall the discussion of that time, in which it was emphasized that if the protection of the capital concerned an internal opponent, then the acquisition of a non-Western system was the only way\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, it should be added that the overactive TAI (Turkish Aerospace Industries) is also based at the specific base where the system was developed\u2026 with whatever this may imply. Following is a series of satellite photos with later dates (3-5 years) showing the system still developed. The radar can be seen\u2026 so it’s not “in a box”, generator pairs (H\/Z) outdoors next to hangars, which is common Russian practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consequently, an a priori conclusion that one can reach, without even taking into account the test that took place in mid-October 2020 (center photo of the post), further north, next to the Black Sea, is that the Turkish S-400s certainly they are not “in the boxes”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, this will not be impossible if the situation requires it. however, it cannot be ruled out that there is only one radar in Ankara and launchers in places that have not been detected – we are always talking about open sources – or have even been moved to an area near the Aegean. From now on, for the clarification of the “mystery”, others undertake\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
