A person has been convicted and jailed for the first time in Britain for domestic violence after being sprayed with SmartWater – a liquid that can only be detected under UV rays, as the technology tests ways to keep women safer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The specific substance remains on the skin for up to six weeks and on clothing for much longer and categorically links the perpetrator to the specific batch of water that was sprayed and the crime he committed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The victim who reported the man in Yorkshire is one of 200 women across Britain who have the ‘smart’ liquid in their homes. The packages contain a spray bottle, a gel for doors and knobs, and a special trap that sprays the liquid if someone approaches the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For many years the same technology has been used to protect property and deter thieves by applying it to high-value items. When the liquid dries on the surface it is invisible to the naked eye, but glows under UV rays and flashlights used by police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police in West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and Staffordshire are using the kit, which costs around \u00a3150 per person, as a strategy to tackle domestic violence. SmartWater consists of a combination of rare elements not easily found in nature. Each bottle has a different quantity, while each kit and each batch is unique, so it is easy to match and identify the perpetrator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
