Russia has developed an artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI-ML) system that detects flaws in cockpit glass and the structure that holds the cockpit glass. This is the part of an aircraft cockpit that tends to wear out more than any other over time in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reports suggest that the laser device in question, named Spekle, has been tested on Moscow’s Su-34 fighter-bomber, the main aircraft of the Russian Air Force’s ground attack fleet. Spekle is one of several artificial intelligence systems that Russia has integrated into its combat and ground weapons platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Previously, the Su-57 fifth-generation fighter and the Marker unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) were said by Russian media to have received artificial intelligence systems that served various purposes, such as communications, enemy target detection, autonomous operations, etc. At the same time, the Su -34 has been used extensively since the start of the offensive in Ukraine in February last year, flying at high and low altitudes to launch missiles or bombs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fighter is understood to continue to be used as normal by Russian pilots, however maintenance procedures will increase significantly the longer the Su-34 flies in Ukrainian skies. Thus, we can estimate with great confidence that the Spekle system will be mass produced after its trial use, while we expect to see it in use on other aircraft of the Russian Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Spekle “Sees” Everything in the Cockpit<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n A report by Russia’s state-run RIA Novosti described the system as a “new laser array with a neural network” designed to “control the cockpit goggles of Russian-made Su-34 fighter-bombers.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n The said development was revealed to Russian journalists who visited the Russian air force academy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, we should mention that repeated flights can result in high pressure on the frame of the airplanes that holds the glass of the cockpit, resulting in the weakening of the glass and the reduction of its robustness.
