A figure of about fifty people in which civilians and Afghans soldiers are included
dies every day in
Afghanistan.

Suicide attacks do not discriminate targeting both camps and mosques,
schools, and all kinds of festive family events of the Afghan people. Their
sole purpose is to provoke as many dead and wounded in civilians as the Afghan
people begin to increase pressure and ultimately turn against the Afghan
government by believing that it cannot protect them.

by Thanos S. The result of this is the entire province of the country and not only the big cities have turned into a huge field of conflict.

Afghan commandos and Afghan National Army Air Corps 2010
Photo by US Navy by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class David Quillen
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain

The recent United Nations report (17/10/2019) states that the UN
Assistance Mission Afghanistan (UNAMA) for the first nine months of 2019
counted more than 8200 casualties civilians with 2563 dead and 5676 injured (Source:
UN, https://news.un.org/en/story/2019/10/1049491 ) with the majority of them being women and children.

In addition to increasing the incidence and killing of suicide attacks, the
increase in the number of victims contributes to the US and Afghan Army air
bombing. But suicide attacks are like uncontrollable bombings applied by the
Islamic State through the jicantists who operate in Afghanistan.

A large part of the population to survive this “hell” is forced
either to emigrate to other neighbouring countries with the ultimate purpose of
being led to Europe at some point or to abandon their houses and their
possessions and to seek family refuge in displaced persons camps operating on
the outskirts of major cities and particularly on the outskirts of the capital
Kabul.

But in these displaced persons camps are not covered basic humanitarian
needs since there is no water supply while the electricity is scarce during the
day and night. The only aid to meet the nutritional needs in the displaced
persons camps comes from the humanitarian organisations’. But it is very likely
in the future that this aid should be interrupted as well.

Afghanistan’s economy

Most Afghan residents simply survive and since the proportion of population living below the national poverty
line (in percentages) increased in 54,5% (2016-2017) from 38% (2011-2012). The percentage of
food-insecure population is at the level of 44,6%. The annual official
unemployment is at 23,1% (Source: Afghanistan Living Conditions Survey, Islamic
Republic of Afghanistan, Central Statistics Organization, www.cso.gov.af ).

The ‘curse’ of the Afghan people lies in the corruption plaguing the state
apparatus. In conjunction with the excessive security problem facing the
country, the Afghan economy is heavily dependent on the international
community.

The hope for Peace

As US President Donald Trump in every way desires the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan and before the presidential elections in November 2020, there is hope that the Taliban will be forced to sit at the table of talks with the US and the Afghan government.

Hamid Karzai-President of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (2006) after the fall of Taliban dominates the political scene of the country
Source: The White House, Photo by Paul Morse, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain

But the question in this case is that as time goes by, the President of the
United States will be pressed and pushed to reach a peace agreement in order to
pull the American troops back to the US by presenting it to the American
electorate that he kept his pre-election promise before the 2016 elections.

But if the Taliban enter talks with the US without having to agree to
anything with the sole aim of simply gnawing time they will indirectly increase
the pressure for results on the US side and then there will be a high risk of
either not achieving Peace Agreement or a fragile agreement is reached until
the American troops from Afghanistan have left, perpetuating after the war.

Additional issues that want cleanup are whether the Taliban will accept to
return to the country’s politics without retaining an armed arm. In addition to
any talks between the US and the Taliban, political-religious and human rights
issues and women’s rights in Afghanistan will have to be cleared up the next
day so that the Taliban will not arise new issues after the closure of the
talks.

Moreover, the crucial issue arising from these peace talks is not whether
the Taliban will talk to the United States but whether any government that will
emerge after the talks and free elections will be able to put the country in
order after the withdrawal of NATO and US troops, respectively, in order to
launch the long-suffering economy of Afghanistan.

Currently the only solution-hope of the Afghan people to return to their
homes and fields is to have peace between the Taliban and the Afghan
government. A solution that still does not appear on the horizon.

The war in Afghanistan continues unabated for the 18th consecutive year.
