China has revealed its clear intentions to become an “Arctic superpower” by 2030. Despite being some 1,500 kilometers from the Arctic Circle, Beijing has not stopped considering itself a “quasi-Arctic state” and is now moving to the deployment of a network of acoustic devices in the Arctic Ocean that will herald the militarization of the top of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Arctic could see its first ice-free summer by 2030 if conditions continue. This fact has been an occasion for more and more countries to be interested in the region, thus increasing the pace of their political, scientific and military ventures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post news agency reported that China is looking to deploy acoustic devices in the Arctic, as it recently tested and evaluated new underwater acoustic devices. The report cites a study published by the Chinese Journal of Arctic Research, which states: “Acoustic information that can be collected from the planned large-scale acoustic network could be used in a wide range of applications, including achieving subglacial communications, navigation and positioning, for the detection of targets and for the reconstruction of marine environmental parameters”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“They were designed for scientific purposes, but all these things have dual purposes,” commented an Indian arctic expert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, Arctic observers argue that acoustic devices play an important role in understanding climate change in the Arctic, as oceanographic data from the Arctic Ocean – especially from great depths – is scarce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of course, this data can also be used to detect the movement of submarines and understand the marine ecosystem in order to chart new routes, both below and above the surface of the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Arctic Research Institute of China is conducting the research. Regarding the first test, the said institute said that “the system carried various instruments, but the most important was a vector hydrophone with multiple sensors placed in different orientations to measure both pressure and particle motion of sound waves \u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
